The ledger
Move the start date and every day's daylight recomputes; change the fuel figures and the cost follows. Distances are the road authorities'; driving minutes assume normal conditions.
Season: May–September as written; October–April with Route 574 round Snæfellsjökull, Route 862 north of Dettifoss and Route 923 checked on umferdin.is the morning you need them
Fuel = km ÷ 100 × 7.5 l × 284 ISK/l, price dated 2026-11 (source on the page). Accommodation mid-range and food mid-range are bands, not numbers, for 2 people. Daylight is computed for each day's midpoint; a day marked dark has more driving minutes than daylight minutes.

Ten days is the comfortable Ring Road. The ledger comes to about 2,160 km and 27.5 hours of driving, which is 605 km and 8 hours more than the 7-day loop, and those extra kilometres are not spent on longer days: the average falls slightly, to 216 km a day. What they buy is Snæfellsnes, a second night in the east, the whole Diamond Circle instead of a single waterfall, and a half-day of slack that is deliberately left unspent until the weather spends it. The west stays Westfjords-free on purpose; that peninsula is its own six-day ledger with a ferry in it. This is the version to pick for a first visit between May and September with a party of two to four adults, and it is the version the comparison page recommends over seven days whenever the flight dates allow it.
Arithmetic as on every ledger here: Route 1 legs from the Icelandic Wikipedia article's segment list, the rest routed over OpenStreetMap; 80 km/h on paved road and 60 on gravel, rounded to five; stops on top.
Days 1–2 — Keflavík to Vík to Höfn, 495 km
Identical to the first two days of the 7-day loop, and for the same reason: the south coast has the densest stops and you are freshest. Fuel at Hvolsvöllur on Day 1 and at Kirkjubæjarklaustur on Day 2, because the 200 km from there to Höfn has no station on Route 1. Reynisfjara from behind the sign line, Skaftafell for the Svartifoss walk, Jökulsárlón for an hour. If the 7-day ledger is a sprint on Day 2, the 10-day one is the same sprint with the promise of an easy Day 5.
Day 3 — Höfn to Egilsstaðir via Stokksnes, 285 km
The first dividend. Stokksnes is a 34 km return on a private gravel road east of Höfn, with a small fee at the gate and Vestrahorn behind the black dunes; the 7-day ledger leaves it out, this one counts it. Then Route 1 along the coast through Djúpivogur (fuel), Breiðdalsvík, Stöðvarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður and Reyðarfjörður, over Fagridalur to Egilsstaðir. Öxi (Route 939) would save 65 km; it is gravel, steep, summer-only and excluded by many rental contracts, so the ledger does not take it.
Day 4 — Egilsstaðir, two out-and-backs, 200 km
The second dividend: a night without packing. Seyðisfjörður is 27 km over Fjarðarheiði on Route 93, paved, a 620 m pass that is one of the first in the east to be shut by snow; it is the Norröna port, the town with the painted street and the church, and a morning. Stuðlagil is 72 km the other way, up the Jökuldalur on Route 1 then Route 923 (part gravel) to the car park at Grund on the west bank, or on to Klaustursel for the longer east-bank path with the better view of the columns. Both trips return to the same bed. If weather or tiredness removes one, the ledger loses 55 or 145 km and nothing else moves.
Day 5 — Egilsstaðir to Mývatn, 165 km
Fill up in Egilsstaðir; there is no fuel on Route 1 across Jökuldalsheiði until Reykjahlíð. This is the shortest day of the trip and it stays that way: Hverir, the steaming ground below Námafjall, is beside the road 8 km before Reykjahlíð, and the 36 km lake loop past Dimmuborgir and the pseudocraters is the afternoon. The loop is not counted in the ledger because it is optional and local.
Day 6 — Mývatn to Akureyri round the Diamond Circle, 230 km
Where the 7-day ledger takes Dettifoss as a detour on the way in, this one makes a day of it. Route 862 north from Route 1 is paved to the Dettifoss car park (built 2011, per the Wikipedia article); the continuation north to Ásbyrgi has been rebuilt in stages and its surface should be checked on umferdin.is the morning you drive it. Ásbyrgi is the horseshoe canyon with the visitor centre at its mouth. Route 85 then runs west along the coast to Húsavík, the whale-watching harbour, and Route 845 and 85 south to Goðafoss on Route 1. Akureyri is 36 km on through the Vaðlaheiði tunnel; the toll is paid online within 24 hours of passing.
Day 7 — Akureyri to Borgarnes, 325 km
The same long day as in the 7-day loop, and there is no way round it: Öxnadalsheiði (540 m), Skagafjörður, Blönduós (fuel), Holtavörðuheiði (400 m), Hrútafjörður, Borgarnes. Hvammstangi is 6 km off Route 1 and counted. In summer this is four uneventful hours; in winter it is the day to move if the forecast says so, because both passes are on umferdin.is's closure list before anything on the south coast.
Day 8 — Snæfellsnes to Stykkishólmur, 235 km
The third dividend. Route 54 west from Borgarnes along the south shore of the peninsula to Arnarstapi, where the coast path to Hellnar is an hour. Route 574 continues round the tip under Snæfellsjökull — the glacier that is the peninsula's reason — past Djúpalónssandur, and on to Ólafsvík (fuel) and Grundarfjörður, where Kirkjufell stands beside the road. Stykkishólmur, on the north shore, is the night and the Baldur ferry port if you ever extend this into the Westfjords. Route 574 is the one road on the day whose surface should be checked.
Day 9 — Stykkishólmur to Reykjavík, 175 km
Route 54 back to Route 1 at Borgarnes, the Hvalfjörður tunnel (toll-free since 2018), the city. If the spare half-day has survived to here, Hraunfossar — the springs that pour out of the lava edge into the Hvítá — is 57 km up Route 50 from Borgarnes and the same back, 115 km in all, and the ledger leaves it out so the choice stays yours.
Day 10 — Reykjavík to Keflavík, 50 km
A city morning and Route 41. The Blue Lagoon is 20 km from the terminal and is listed as a stop because it is on the way, not as a recommendation. If a pass closed on Day 7 and you lost Borgarnes, this is the morning that paid for it.
What it costs
Fuel: 2,160 km at 7.5 l/100 km is 162 litres, priced at the dated figure on the Iceland country page. Accommodation and food are bands: nine nights in the mid band is guesthouses and small hotels booked by March for June; the upper band is the same towns with dinner on site. Fees that exist: paid car parks at Seljalandsfoss, Reynisfjara, Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón and Hraunfossar; the Stokksnes gate; the Vaðlaheiði tunnel toll. Amounts are on the signs and change; none is large.
What goes wrong
The same three things as on any Ring Road ledger — wind, passes, daylight — plus two surfaces that are not Route 1: the northern Route 862 and Route 574. In winter both may be unploughed on the day you need them, and the fallback is simple: take Dettifoss as an out-and-back from Route 1 and drive Snæfellsnes only as far as Arnarstapi and back along the south shore. The buffer is designed to be spent on exactly one of these; if it is spent twice, drop Hraunfossar and the second Day 4 trip before anything else.
Variations
Seven days: the shorter ledger is on the site, and the comparison between the two is arithmetic rather than opinion. Twelve days: add the Westfjords as a separate loop from Stykkishólmur by the Baldur ferry (its own ledger). Fourteen: add two nights in the east and do Seyðisfjörður and Stuðlagil on separate days, with Borgarfjörður eystri as the third.
