Kirkjufell is the most photographed mountain in Iceland and the least demanding stop on Snæfellsnes: the car park is on the north-coast road a couple of minutes west of Grundarfjörður, the falls are a five-minute walk, and the whole thing takes twenty minutes unless the light is good, in which case it takes as long as the light lasts.
On a Snæfellsnes loop it falls naturally between Stykkishólmur and Ólafsvík on the north side; on a Westfjords trip it is a detour from the ferry at Stykkishólmur. The car park is small and fills by mid-morning in summer; evening is better for both crowds and light, and in winter the aurora crowd arrives after dark.
The practical line: a car park with a toilet block at the falls. A parking charge is reported, but no official page confirming the operator or amount could be reached today, so budget for it and read the sign. Grundarfjörður, a few minutes east, has fuel and a Kjörbúðin store (kjorbudin.is, confirmed today); fuel operator not confirmed on a station map today.
Safety: the mountain itself is a serious scramble with fixed ropes and has had fatalities; it is not a route-planner's stop and is not described here. The falls path crosses a footbridge and is iced from November to April. The viewpoint stands beside route 54, where traffic does not expect pedestrians; use the car park, not the verge.
Quiet before 09:00; busy from 10:00 in July and August.
