Vík is the first natural sleep on an anticlockwise Ring Road and the last real town for a long way. East of here the road runs about 70 km across Mýrdalssandur and the Eldhraun lava to Kirkjubæjarklaustur, then roughly another 70 km to Skaftafell, and neither stretch has a shop. That makes Vík the fill-everything stop: tank, cool bag, water.
The practical line, confirmed on the operators' lists today: Krónan has a supermarket here (kronan.is) and Olís has a fuel station (olis.is). Other fuel brands may be present but were not confirmed on a station map today. There is a municipal pool and a campsite; hours were not checked. Toilets are at the shops and the campsite.
On the clock, Vík is about three hours from Reykjavík without stops and five with the waterfalls, which is why a 10:00 departure from the capital puts you here for a late lunch and a 16:00 departure puts you here for dinner. The town is quiet before 09:00 and after the coaches leave around 18:00.
Weather decides more here than anywhere on the south coast. Mýrdalssandur and the Reynisfjall pass just west of town are the sections the Road Administration closes in gales, and the Katla evacuation signs along the road are real: if the sirens sound, drive out of the sandur, do not stop to photograph it. Check umferdin.is and safetravel.is before leaving in winter.
