Boat on Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon
A 30–40-minute amphibian ride or a 75-minute Zodiac among the icebergs, May to October, 7,100 or 16,600 ISK an adult; the lagoon shore itself is free.

The boat is the one timed element at Jökulsárlón, and the decision is simple: the amphibian ride is short, cheap by Icelandic standards and takes children; the Zodiac is three times the price, twice the length and goes closer to the glacier front. Both run only in the open-water months. Anyone on a Ring Road day between Vík and Höfn can fit the amphibian in; the Zodiac wants a day that has nowhere else to be.
The figures, from the operator's 2026 price list read today: amphibian 7,100 ISK for an adult, 3,500 ISK for ages 6 to 12, free under six, 30 to 40 minutes; Zodiac 16,600 ISK for an adult, 8,300 ISK for ages 10 to 12, one hour fifteen, minimum height 130 cm. The lagoon itself costs nothing beyond the Vatnajökull National Park regional fee charged to the car, which is on the Jökulsárlón stop page.
The arithmetic for the ledger: 40 minutes on the water plus 20 minutes to check in and board is 60 minutes on site. From Höfn, the sleep town on the Ring Road journeys, the lagoon is about 80 km west on Route 1, an hour each way, so 120 minutes of detour. With the 30-minute booking buffer the ride costs a Höfn-based day 210 minutes. That is the honest figure for someone who sleeps in Höfn and drives back for it. On the Vík-to-Höfn day the lagoon is on the road anyway, so the detour disappears and the boat costs that day 90 minutes, which is the figure most people should use.
Timing matters more than the boat type. The lagoon is roughly an hour east of Skaftafell and an hour west of Höfn, so on most Ring Road days it lands in mid-afternoon with the coaches. The operator says boats leave at least every 30 minutes in high summer, so a booked slot is not strictly necessary, but a 10:00 or a 17:00 departure gives you an emptier car park and lower light.
What goes wrong
Wind and ice. The terms read today say tours may be delayed or cancelled when conditions are unsafe on the lagoon, with a full refund, and that is the common summer problem: a strong easterly packs the icebergs against the ramp and the amphibians stop. The cancellation ladder for the customer is 100 per cent refund at 24 hours or more, 50 per cent from 23 hours down to one hour, and nothing stated inside an hour. Date changes are free.
The other failure is the queue. In July the amphibian car park is the busiest place between Vík and Höfn, and the walk-up queue can run past the next two departures. Booking online fixes that for the price of commitment.
Alternatives on the same road
Fjallsárlón, a few kilometres west, has its own lagoon and boat operator and is quieter; the Jökulsárlón beach across the bridge is free and better in low winter light than in summer; and in winter, when there are no boats, the operators sell guided glacier walks and ice-cave visits from the same car park instead.
Practical line: flush toilets at the lagoon (the park says so), a seasonal café, no fuel; the next fuel east is Höfn. Do not climb on stranded icebergs and do not stand at the surf line on the beach; the park's rangers supervise the area every day of the year.

What this page adds
A 210-minute ledger cost for the amphibian ride computed from the operator's 40-minute duration, 20 minutes of check-in, the Höfn-to-lagoon return drive and a booking buffer — and the note that on a Vík-to-Höfn day the drive is already paid for and the figure drops to 90.
