Djúpivogur is the first village after the long empty coast from Höfn and the point where an eastbound Ring Road driver decides between the fjord road and the inland shortcut. From here the Ring Road itself climbs over Breiðdalsheiði to Egilsstaðir, while route 96 along the fjords is longer but lower and better served; the Road Administration closes Breiðdalsheiði first in winter, so check umferdin.is before choosing.
On a route plan it is a leg-stretch and a top-up, not a sleep, unless the day started late at Jökulsárlón. Allow twenty minutes for the harbour and the egg sculptures along the quay, an hour if the café is open.
The practical line: Kjörbúðin has a store here (kjorbudin.is, confirmed today), the only chain grocery between Höfn and the Egilsstaðir area on this road. Fuel is sold in the village, but the operator could not be confirmed on a station map today, so do not plan the tank around it; fill at Höfn and treat anything here as a bonus. There is a municipal pool and a campsite. Toilets at the harbour and the shop.
Timing: about an hour and a half from Höfn at legal speed, and two to three hours on to Egilsstaðir depending on the pass or the fjords. Quiet all day outside July; the cruise tender days are the exception, when a ship anchors in the bay and the village fills for a few hours. Phone signal is good in the village and drops in the fjords either side.
