Klaustur, as everyone shortens it, is the fuel stop in the middle of the longest shopless gap on the South Coast. Vík is about 70 km west, Skaftafell about 70 km east, Höfn well over 200 km. On a route plan it is a mandatory top-up for anyone running a small tank or a camper, and the place to buy whatever the next two days need, because the shop at Skaftafell is a campsite kiosk.

The practical line: Olís has a station here (olis.is, confirmed today). A small grocery exists in the village, but no national chain store was found on the Bónus, Krónan, Nettó or Kjörbúðin store lists today, so stock up at Vík or Höfn if you need a real supermarket. There is a municipal pool and the Skaftárstofa visitor centre for Vatnajökull National Park, where rangers have current road and trail conditions for the Lakagígar F-road (F206) and for Skaftafell.

Timing: it is an hour from Vík and an hour to Skaftafell at legal speed, so it falls at mid-morning on a Vík-to-Höfn day or mid-afternoon the other way. Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon is ten minutes west on route 206, and Systrafoss and Kirkjugólf are walkable from the village if the legs need stretching.

Safety is about the road, not the village: the Eldhraun lava west of town is single carriageway with soft shoulders, and the straight Skeiðarársandur stretch east of it is where crosswinds catch high vehicles. Check umferdin.is wind warnings before crossing the sandur with a camper.
