Greenland
No roads between towns: Greenland is reached from Keflavík or Copenhagen by air and crossed by air and sea. Here it is a five-day add-on to an Iceland trip, Nuuk and Ilulissat, with no car.
Greenland is the one country on this site without a ledger kilometre. There are no roads between settlements, only streets within them, so every journey between towns is a flight or a boat, and the arithmetic that decides a Greenland trip is flight days and fog, not kilometres and hours. It is here because it is three hours from Keflavík and is the add-on that most often changes the length of an Iceland trip.
Getting there
From Iceland: Air Greenland flies Keflavík–Nuuk all year (Tuesdays on its 2026 route map), and Icelandair flies Keflavík–Nuuk all year and Keflavík–Ilulissat from June to September, with the Nuuk flight at about two hours twenty on Icelandair's page; both airlines use Keflavík, not the Reykjavík city airport, for Nuuk and Ilulissat. Icelandair's East and South Greenland flights, to Kulusuk and to Qaqortoq's new airport, have used the city airport; check the ticket. Norlandair flies Akureyri to Constable Point in the north-east a few times a week (Visit Greenland). From Denmark: Air Greenland flies Copenhagen–Nuuk daily, Copenhagen–Nuuk via Kangerlussuaq on some days, and from 29 October 2026 Copenhagen–Ilulissat on Wednesdays. From Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Faroes: through Copenhagen or Keflavík. There are no ferries to Greenland from any country.
Car, ferry or flight
Flight, and inside Greenland also flight: Air Greenland operates all domestic routes from its Nuuk hub, with Nuuk–Ilulissat several times a day all year at about an hour and a half. The coastal ferry Sarfaq Ittuk (Arctic Umiaq Line) runs the west coast between Qaqortoq and Ilulissat in a multi-day round trip, which is a journey in itself and not an add-on. Boats within the fjords are how you see anything beyond the town. There is nothing to hire except in the sense of a taxi; the Kangerlussuaq track to the ice sheet is driven by local operators.
Money
Danish kroner; cards accepted in the towns, cash useful in the settlements. Fuel is sold at a single national price set by Polaroil, the KNI subsidiary, which publishes it on its site without a date; no figure is carried here, and it is irrelevant to a route with no car. Accommodation is upper band and limited, especially in Ilulissat, where the bed count is small and cruise days fill the town; food is mid to upper. The fees that exist are the boats: fjord cruises and icefjord sailings are the main cost after the flights and are priced by the operators. Air Greenland's booking site showed Nuuk–Ilulissat one-way fares from DKK 1,906 for May 2027 on 1 November 2026, quoted only to size the leg.
Driving rules
There are none that matter to a visitor: no road network, no inter-town driving, right-hand traffic on the streets of Nuuk and Ilulissat, where taxis and the local bus are the transport. The sentence to plan around is the Wikipedia transport article's: there are no roads between settlements in Greenland. Safety on the water and the ice is the operators' and the Greenland Police's domain, and the icefjord's boardwalks and marked trails are the limits of unguided walking.
Seasons
June to September for the icefjord by boat, the whales and the midnight sun at Ilulissat (24 hours of daylight from 22 May to 24 July, computed, NOAA); February to April for dog sledding, the frozen fjord and the aurora. Fog closes the airports for a day at a time in summer and the Keflavík flight is not daily, so a buffer night in Reykjavík at each end is part of any plan. The season planner has the month-by-month detail.
Its journeys
Greenland add-on from Reykjavík, 5 days. The Copenhagen stopover piece notes the Copenhagen–Nuuk and Copenhagen–Ilulissat flights as the alternative access.

- Greenland add-on from Reykjavík, 5 days
Keflavík to Nuuk, Nuuk to Ilulissat and back by air: no roads, no car, 7 hours 40 of flying, two towns, one icefjord. It changes an Iceland trip's length, not its shape.
