Greenland add-on from Reykjavík, 5 days
Keflavík to Nuuk, Nuuk to Ilulissat and back by air: no roads, no car, 7 hours 40 of flying, two towns, one icefjord. It changes an Iceland trip's length, not its shape.

The ledger
Move the start date and every day's daylight recomputes; change the fuel figures and the cost follows. Distances are the road authorities'; driving minutes assume normal conditions.
Season: June to September for the Ilulissat icefjord by boat and the Keflavík–Ilulissat direct flights; Nuuk is served from Keflavík all year; February–April for dog sledding and the aurora
Fuel = km ÷ 100 × 0 l × — DKK/l. Accommodation upper and food mid-range are bands, not numbers, for 2 people. Daylight is computed for each day's midpoint; a day marked dark has more driving minutes than daylight minutes.

Is it sane? Yes, as an add-on, in summer, for a party that has already decided on Iceland and has five spare days and the money for them. Greenland is not a place you drive. There are no roads between towns, so the question "is this loop sane" becomes "do the flights line up", and in 2027 they do: Keflavík to Nuuk on Air Greenland or Icelandair, Nuuk to Ilulissat several times a day on Air Greenland, and back the same way or direct from Ilulissat to Keflavík in the summer months. The ledger carries 7 hours 40 of flying and not one kilometre of road.
The decision it changes is the length of the Iceland trip, not its shape. Whatever Icelandic route you were planning stays as it was; this adds five days and two buffer nights in Reykjavík at either end, because Greenland's airports close in fog and the Keflavík flight is not daily.
Day 1: Keflavík to Nuuk
Keflavík, not the city airport. Icelandair's Nuuk and Ilulissat flights moved from Reykjavík's domestic airport to Keflavík when Nuuk's new runway opened, and Air Greenland has always flown Keflavík–Nuuk; Visit Greenland lists both from KEF, and Air Greenland's 2026 route map shows its Nuuk–Keflavík service on Tuesdays. Icelandair quotes about two hours twenty. Nuuk is one hour behind Iceland in summer and two in winter, which is worth knowing when the connection is tight.
Nuuk is a capital of 20,000 with apartment blocks, a university and a harbour where the fjord boats leave. The old colonial harbour and the National Museum are a short walk; the town ends abruptly at the fell, and that edge is the first thing to understand about the country.
Getting the dates to line up
The add-on is five days only if the flights are. Air Greenland's Keflavík service is weekly on its 2026 route map and Icelandair's days are on its timetable; between them there are several departures a week in summer and fewer in winter, so pick the Greenland dates first and fit the Iceland route around them, not the reverse. Book the two Greenland flights and the Icelandic one on a single ticket where an airline offers it, because a fog delay on a separate ticket is your problem and on a through ticket is theirs. Baggage allowances on the domestic Air Greenland legs are smaller than on the international ones; check before packing for both climates.
Day 2: Nuuk fjord
The Nuuk fjord system is the day. Boats run from the harbour to the inner fjord and the abandoned settlement of Kangeq, and in summer the whales are in the outer fjord. Book before you fly; the boats are small and July fills. On land, Lille Malene above the airport gives a view of the whole fjord in three hours of walking.
Day 3: Nuuk to Ilulissat
Air Greenland flies Nuuk–Ilulissat several times a day all year, about an hour and a half (its own page). Ilulissat is at 69°N on Disko Bay, a town of 4,500 and as many sled dogs, and at the start of July the sun does not set: the NOAA computation gives 24 hours of daylight from 22 May to 24 July. Hotel rooms face the bergs; book early, because the town's bed count is small and the cruise ships add their own crowds for a few hours at a time.
Day 4: the icefjord
The Ilulissat icefjord is a UNESCO site at the mouth of the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, which pushes more ice into the sea than any other in the northern hemisphere. The boardwalk from the Icefjord Centre to Sermermiut takes an hour; the blue-marked trail along the fjord mouth takes a morning and needs boots. In the evening the boats go out among the bergs; midnight-sun sailings are the ones to take.
Day 5: back to Keflavík
Ilulissat–Nuuk and Nuuk–Keflavík, about four hours in the air with the connection. From June to September Icelandair also flies Ilulissat–Keflavík direct, which its page puts at about three and a half hours; the operating days are not quoted here, check the timetable. Either way, sleep in Reykjavík before any transatlantic flight.
What it costs
Greenland is upper-band for accommodation and mid for food, with the caveat that everything in Ilulissat is flown or shipped in. The fees that exist: fjord and icefjord boats, which are the main cost after the flights and are priced by the operators; nothing on land. There is no fuel line because there is no car. Air Greenland's booking site showed one-way Nuuk–Ilulissat fares from DKK 1,906 for May 2027 on 1 November 2026, which is quoted only to size the leg; fares change daily.
What goes wrong
Fog. Nuuk and Ilulissat both close for a day at a time in summer, and a missed Keflavík connection costs a day because the flight is not daily. Boats cancel in wind. The fix is the buffer night at each end in Reykjavík, built into the recommendation above and not into the five-day ledger.
Variations
Nuuk only, three days: Keflavík–Nuuk, the fjord, back. Ilulissat only in summer, four days: Keflavík–Ilulissat direct, two icefjord days, direct back. Copenhagen access: Air Greenland flies Copenhagen–Nuuk daily and, from 29 October 2026, Copenhagen–Ilulissat on Wednesdays, which makes Greenland an alternative to Iceland for a Danish stopover rather than an add-on to it. Winter: same shape via Nuuk, with dog sledding and the aurora in Ilulissat from February.
