Diamond Beach (Fellsfjara) at sunrise

Ice from Jökulsárlón stranded on black sand, best in the first light; computed sunrise from 02:37 in June to 10:55 on 1 January. An hour's drive from Höfn.

The beach across the road from Jökulsárlón, which the national park calls Fellsfjara and everyone else calls the Diamond Beach, is where ice from the lagoon is stranded on black sand after it drifts out to sea. In the middle of the day it is a car park and a crowd; at sunrise the ice catches the low light and there are few people. It suits photographers, anyone sleeping in Höfn or on the Vík–Höfn stretch, and a winter trip, when sunrise comes at a civilised hour. It costs nothing but the parking fee and an early alarm.

What the official sources say, read today: Jökulsárlón and Fellsfjara lie on either side of Route 1 on Breiðamerkursandur; the area is accessible year-round; there are flush toilets at Jökulsárlón; park rangers maintain and supervise Jökulsárlón, Fellsfjara and Fjallsárlón every day of the year. From the Eystri-Fellsfjara car park, a visitor path runs under the bridges. The regional parking fee is 1,110 ISK for a car of up to five seats and 1,440 ISK for six to nine, valid until midnight, with half off if another national-park fee area has been paid the same day.

Mid-June gives the earliest sunrise, 02:37 on the 15th; mid-December the latest, 10:51. From November to February the dawn visit fits a normal morning.

The arithmetic

Höfn is the sleep town on day 2 of the seven-day and ten-day Ring Road. Höfn to Fellsfjara is 66 km and about 58 minutes each way by OSRM on OpenStreetMap. With an hour on the beach, a dawn run costs 180 minutes before breakfast; on 1 November that means leaving Höfn at about 07:25 and being back by 10:20. On the Vík–Höfn day itself the beach is on the road and costs only the stop, but the day reaches it in the afternoon, not at dawn.

What goes wrong

No ice: some mornings the beach is nearly bare. Waves: the Atlantic surf here is strong; stay back from the water's edge and off the ice. Cloud: a computed sunrise is not a visible one, and the coast is often overcast. Dark roads: in winter the drive from Höfn is in full darkness on Route 1; check road.is and vedur.is first.

Alternatives on the same stretch

The Jökulsárlón boats start a few hundred metres away in season, and Fjallsárlón's Zodiac ten minutes west runs until November. For a dawn of a different kind, Stokksnes east of Höfn is on the Höfn–Egilsstaðir ledger day.

Questions people ask

Is there always ice on the beach?
No. The ice comes out of Jökulsárlón through the river channel and washes back up on the sand; how much lies there depends on the lagoon and the sea. No source can promise it on a given morning.
What does it cost?
The beach is free. Parking in the Jökulsárlón area carries the national park's regional fee, 1,110 ISK for a car of up to five seats, valid until midnight on the day paid and halved if you have already paid at another fee area that day.
Is it safe?
Treat the surf line with respect: do not stand among stranded blocks at the water's edge, and never climb on ice. The national park's rangers supervise the area every day of the year.
When is sunrise on my date?
Use the table on this page, computed for the beach. Iceland stays on UTC all year, so the times need no adjustment for summer time.
