A short ride on Icelandic horses is the one experience in this collection that is about the animal rather than the landscape, though the landscape helps: the stables near Hafnarfjörður sit on the edge of the lava fields south of Reykjavík, and the standard tour is 1½ to 2 hours on moss-covered lava and gravel tracks. It suits beginners, families with children from seven, and a Reykjavík day without a car. Riders over 110 kg cannot go, and in deep winter half the ride is in the dark on the afternoon departure.

The figures, read today on ishestar.is for the Lava Tour: 1½–2 hours of riding, departures daily at 10:00 and 14:00, pick-up at 08:45 and 12:45 from major stops in Reykjavík, about four hours in all with the transfer. The operator's booking calendar showed 16,900 ISK for an adult (13+) on every November date; the tour page shows a listed price of 18,900 ISK and 16,900 ISK as the current one, and a child category for ages 7 to 12. Helmets, rubber boots and rainwear or a winter overall are lent; there is storage for bags (backpacks are not allowed on the ride); hot drinks follow at the stables. The group is split by ability, with a relaxed group at walk and a faster one at trot and tölt, the breed's smooth fifth gait. Íshestar is the operator whose prices were read; naming it is not a recommendation.

The arithmetic

From a Reykjavík bed, the operator's own figure is the ledger cost: about 240 minutes door to door with the pick-up. Self-driving: Harpa to the stables at Sörlaskeið 26 in Hafnarfjörður is 16 km and about 21 minutes by OSRM on OpenStreetMap, the operator asks drivers to arrive 30 minutes before departure, and the ride is up to two hours, which gives about 190 minutes. On the five-day South Coast and Golden Circle journey it fits the arrival day if the flight lands early, or replaces Kerið on day 2.

What goes wrong

Kit and biosecurity: Iceland's horses are unvaccinated, so used riding gloves, saddles and leather gear may not be brought into the country, and riding clothes must be washed or dry-cleaned first; the operator links to the veterinary authority's rules. Weight: 110 kg is a hard limit. Weather: the tour is outdoors in all conditions, and in November the 14:00 ride ends near sunset. Ability: the faster group is for those who already ride; say so honestly when booking.

Alternatives

For a longer ride, the same stables sell a Viking Tour for experienced riders, and a shorter stable visit with a paddock ride. Outdoors without an animal, the Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel is 40 minutes away and runs every hour.

Questions people ask

Do I need to have ridden before?
No. The operator says the Lava Tour suits beginners and intermediate riders and splits the group: a relaxed group mostly at walk, and a faster group at trot and tölt for those who want it.
Are there age or weight limits?
Minimum age seven; children under 12 are advised to stay in the slower group unless used to riding. Maximum rider weight 110 kg on all tours.
Can I bring my own riding gear?
Only if cleaned: Iceland bans used leather riding gear and gloves from entry, and clothing must be washed or disinfected first, because Icelandic horses are unvaccinated. The operator lends helmets, boots and rainwear.
Is there anything after the ride?
Coffee, tea and hot chocolate at the stables, included.
