The ledger
Move the start date and every day's daylight recomputes; change the fuel figures and the cost follows. Distances are the road authorities'; driving minutes assume normal conditions.
Season: Year-round. The ledger is written for June; from November to March Day 4 needs the forecast on its side and the Jökulsárlón leg is the first thing to cut
Fuel = km ÷ 100 × 7.5 l × 284 ISK/l, price dated 2026-11 (source on the page). Accommodation mid-range and food mid-range are bands, not numbers, for 2 people. Daylight is computed for each day's midpoint; a day marked dark has more driving minutes than daylight minutes.

Five days is not the Ring Road, and the mistake most five-day plans make is to behave as if it were. This ledger stays in the south-west quarter of the country: two nights in Reykjavík with a Golden Circle day, then two nights east along the coast, reaching Jökulsárlón and turning back. It comes to about 1,125 km and 14 hours of driving — an average of 2 h 50 min a day, but with one day (Day 4) at four hours and one (Day 1) at forty minutes. It works year-round for a party of two to four adults; what changes with the month is whether Day 4 keeps Jökulsárlón in it, and the ledger shows the daylight for the date you pick so you can decide with the number in front of you.
The arithmetic: Route 1 legs from the Icelandic Wikipedia article's segment list; the Golden Circle loop, the airport road and the spurs to the waterfalls and the canyon routed over OpenStreetMap; 80 km/h on paved road and 60 on gravel, rounded to five; stops on top.
Day 1 — Keflavík airport to Reykjavík, 50 km
Route 41 is a dual carriageway for most of its length and takes forty minutes to the city. If the flight lands before noon, the Blue Lagoon is a 20 km diversion from the airport road; it is a neutral mention and not in the ledger. A rental car is no use in the city centre, where parking is metered, so this is the day to leave it at the guesthouse and walk.
Day 2 — Golden Circle, 240 km
Route 36 to Þingvellir (paid car park at Hakið, free to walk the rift), Route 365 and 37 to Geysir, where Strokkur erupts every few minutes beside the car park, and 10 km on to Gullfoss. Return on Route 35 and Route 1 via Kerið, the crater lake with an entry fee at the gate, and Selfoss (fuel). All of it is paved and most of it is coach-sized; being at Þingvellir by 09:30 is the difference between a rift and a queue. In winter Route 365 between Þingvellir and Laugarvatn is the section to check on umferdin.is; if it is closed, go out and back on Route 36 and 37 and the day is about the same length.
Day 3 — Reykjavík to Vík, 205 km
Route 1 south-east. Hvolsvöllur is the last town with a supermarket and more than one fuel station before Vík; fill up there. Seljalandsfoss is beside the road with a paid car park and a wet path behind the fall that is closed when iced. Skógafoss is 30 km on, with a staircase to the top. Reynisfjara is 11 km short of Vík on Route 215: the beach where the waves reach further than they look, with a sign that shows the day's hazard level and a line the sea does not respect. Vík has fuel, a supermarket and the pool.
Day 4 — Vík to Jökulsárlón and back to Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 330 km
The long day, and the honest reason this is a five-day ledger rather than a four. East of Vík, Route 1 crosses the Mýrdalssandur and the Eldhraun lava to Fjaðrárgljúfur, 2 km up a gravel spur, an hour on the canyon-edge path. Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 8 km on, is the fuel stop — the last one on Route 1 before Höfn, which the ledger never reaches. The road then crosses Skeiðarársandur on single-lane bridges to Skaftafell, where the national park visitor centre and the glacier-walk meeting points are (operators run from the car park; none is recommended here), and 57 km further to Jökulsárlón, the lagoon with the bergs and the bridge. Turn round. Skaftafell on the way back is the better order for the Svartifoss walk, because the car park empties after 16:00. The night at Kirkjubæjarklaustur, rather than Vík, is worth 72 km on this day and 72 km on the next.
Day 5 — Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Keflavík airport, 300 km
Route 1 back west through Vík, Hvolsvöllur, Hella and Selfoss, then Route 41. Fill up at Vík or Hvolsvöllur; the stations at the airport charge more. Returning the car takes an hour with the shuttle. For a flight before 14:00 the day is tight; the alternative is a last night in Reykjavík and a 50 km morning, which turns this into the 10-day ledger's final day.
What it costs
Fuel: 1,125 km at 7.5 l/100 km is 84 litres, priced at the dated figure on the Iceland country page. Accommodation: two nights in Reykjavík and two on the coast; the mid band is guesthouses and small hotels, and Vík is the town to book earliest because it has the fewest beds for the most traffic. Food in the mid band is one cooked meal a day. Fees that exist on this route: paid car parks at Þingvellir, Seljalandsfoss, Reynisfjara, Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón; the Kerið entry fee; nothing at Geysir, Gullfoss or Skógafoss at the time of checking. Amounts are on the signs and change; none is large.
What goes wrong
Three things. Wind on Mýrdalssandur and Skeiðarársandur, where umferdin.is posts gust warnings and a car door can be lost: park into the wind and hold the door. Reynisfjara, where the hazard sign is the whole safety system and people ignore it every year. And daylight in winter: the ledger computes it for your date, and when it is under six hours Day 4 as written does not fit. The winter version stops at Skaftafell (Day 4 becomes 215 km) or stays in Vík and goes only to Fjaðrárgljúfur and back. Safetravel.is's twelve tips apply in full; the one that matters most here is "check weather and road conditions in the morning, and a few times during the day".
Variations
Four days: drop Day 2 and take the Golden Circle as a day tour from Reykjavík on the last morning, or drop Jökulsárlón and sleep in Vík twice. Seven days: continue from Jökulsárlón to Höfn and return along the same coast, which is the winter-safe seven-day plan. Ten days: the Ring Road, on its own ledger, which begins with the same Day 3.
