Denmark

The hub of the North: Copenhagen is the air gateway to the Faroes and Greenland, Hirtshals is the port for the Norröna to Tórshavn and Seyðisfjörður, and the Øresund bridge is the road to Sweden.

Denmark is where the North connects. Copenhagen's airport has the flights to Vágar, Nuuk, Ilulissat, Keflavík and every Scandinavian capital; Hirtshals, at the top of Jutland, is the only port with a ferry to the Faroes and Iceland; and the Øresund bridge puts Sweden twenty minutes away. On this site Denmark is a two-day stopover and the first day of the ferry journey, and nothing in between, because the drive from Copenhagen to Hirtshals is 480 km of motorway that nobody comes north for.

Getting there

From Iceland: Icelandair and SAS fly Keflavík–Copenhagen daily. From the Faroes: Atlantic Airways and SAS to Copenhagen, and the Norröna to Hirtshals all year. From Greenland: Air Greenland flies Nuuk–Copenhagen daily and, from 29 October 2026, Ilulissat–Copenhagen weekly on Wednesdays (Air Greenland route map). From Norway: Color Line and Fjord Line ferries into Hirtshals from Kristiansand, Larvik, Stavanger and Bergen, and the Oslo–Copenhagen DFDS overnight ship. From Sweden: the Øresund bridge and the Helsingborg–Helsingør ferry. From Finland: by air through Copenhagen or Stockholm.

Car, ferry or flight

No car in Copenhagen; the metro runs from under the airport terminal and the city is bicycles and trains. A car is needed only to reach Hirtshals for the Norröna, and then only if the car is going on the ship. Foot passengers reach Hirtshals by train from Copenhagen with a change at Hjørring, a half-day journey, and board the ship without a vehicle, which is what this site's ferry journey assumes. The Øresund bridge is the road to Sweden and is tolled by its operator.

Money

Danish kroner, cards everywhere, cash rarely needed. Drivkraft Danmark, the fuel industry association, publishes the previous day's list prices: 18.49 kr per litre for petrol 95 and 20.69 for diesel as read on 1 November 2026 for 31 October. Accommodation is mid band; food is mid to upper, with Copenhagen's restaurants the strongest value per krone in the North. Fees that exist: the Øresund bridge, the Storebælt bridge between Zealand and Funen (not on any route here), and city parking.

Driving rules

Færdselsloven § 42, in the consolidated act of 2024 on retsinformation.dk, sets the general limits: 50 km/h in built-up areas, which a higher local limit cannot override, 80 km/h outside them, 80 on motortrafikvej, and 130 on motorways, with lower signed limits common on older motorway sections and on the E45 in Jutland. Lights are on at all times. Fines are high and the police publish the tariff. The E45 from Copenhagen to Hirtshals is motorway nearly the whole way after the Storebælt bridge, and the only driving decision is whether to sleep in Hirtshals before a morning check-in.

Seasons

Denmark is a year-round country for a city stop; for the ferry it is the Norröna's calendar that counts. Smyril Line's 2027 schedule runs twice a week to the Faroes from late May to early September and once a week otherwise, with no Iceland call from 21 November to 27 March. Copenhagen on 15 January has about eight hours of daylight and on 15 June about seventeen and a half (computed, NOAA). The season planner has the month-by-month detail.

Its journeys

Iceland and the Faroe Islands by ferry, 12 days, which starts in Copenhagen; Copenhagen or Oslo stopover, 2 days. The Greenland add-on notes the Copenhagen access to Nuuk and Ilulissat as the alternative to going through Iceland.
