Seven days is enough to drive the Ring Road and sleep in six different towns. It is not enough to add anything to it. The ledger above comes to about 1,555 km and 19.5 hours of driving at legal speeds in normal conditions, which is an average of 2 hours 50 minutes a day behind the wheel — comfortable on paper. The catch is distribution: four days carry over three hours of driving before you count a single stop, one day (Day 2) has five places worth an hour each, and there is no spare day anywhere. If one road closes you lose a night in the town you had booked, and with a fixed flight home the loss comes out of the north. For a party of two to four adults who are happy driving and happy to leave Snæfellsnes and the Westfjords for another year, this works from May to September. From October to April the same loop is possible but it is a different trip; see "What goes wrong".

How the minutes are computed: Route 1 legs use the segment lengths in the Icelandic Wikipedia article on the Ring Road, which lists the road town by town; the detours (Stuðlagil, Dettifoss, Hvammstangi, the airport road) are routed over OpenStreetMap with OSRM. Driving minutes assume 80 km/h on paved road (the legal maximum is 90, but towns, single-lane bridges and 70 km/h zones bring the average down) and 60 km/h on gravel, rounded to five. Stops are on top.

Day 1 — Keflavík airport to Vík, 225 km

Pick the car up, take Route 41 past Reykjavík and join Route 1 at the southern edge of the city. Hvolsvöllur, 100 km from the airport, is the last place with a supermarket and more than one fuel station before Vík; fill the tank there even if it is half full. Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss sit beside the road 30 km apart, each a 30-minute stop with a paid car park at the first. Reynisfjara is 11 km short of Vík and is the beach where people are pulled off their feet by waves that look smaller than they are: the warning sign shows the current hazard level and the safe line, and the line is not negotiable. Arrive in Vík with daylight to spare in summer; in winter aim to be parked by 16:00.

Day 2 — Vík to Höfn, 270 km

The day with the most to stop for, so start early. Fjaðrárgljúfur is 2 km off the road on a gravel spur, an hour on foot along the canyon edge. Kirkjubæjarklaustur has fuel and the last shop for 200 km. The road then crosses Skeiðarársandur, where the single-lane bridges over the glacial rivers are the ones to slow for, and reaches Skaftafell: a national park visitor centre, a paid car park and the hour-long walk to Svartifoss. Jökulsárlón is 57 km further; there is parking on both sides of the bridge and the lagoon is free to look at. Höfn is 65 km on. Nothing in the ledger is as long between fuel stops as Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Höfn.

Day 3 — Höfn to Egilsstaðir, 250 km

Since November 2017 Route 1 has run along the coast here, in and out of five fjords through Breiðdalsvík, Stöðvarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður and Reyðarfjörður, then over Fagridalur to Egilsstaðir. It is slower per kilometre than the old inland line but it is paved and it is ploughed. The Öxi pass (Route 939) from Berufjörður cuts about 65 km off the day; it is gravel, steep and closed in winter, and rental agreements often exclude it, so the ledger does not use it. Djúpivogur has fuel at the halfway point. Stokksnes, the headland east of Höfn with the mountain Vestrahorn behind it, is 17 km from town on a private gravel road with a small entry fee; it is not counted in the ledger, and worth the 34 km return only in clear weather.

Day 4 — Egilsstaðir to Mývatn, 250 km

Fill up in Egilsstaðir: there is no fuel on Route 1 until Reykjahlíð. The day crosses the Jökuldalsheiði moor, the emptiest stretch of the Ring Road. Two detours make it 250 km instead of 165. Stuðlagil, the basalt-column canyon on the Jökulsá á Dal, is reached from the west bank via Route 923 (part gravel) to the car park at Grund, about 20 km off Route 1; the east-bank walk from Klaustursel is longer and better. Dettifoss is 24 km off Route 1 on the paved Route 862, which serves the west bank; the gravel Route 864 on the east bank is summer-only and not in the ledger. From Dettifoss the road back to Route 1 rejoins it a few kilometres east of Hverir, the steaming ground below Námafjall, which is the last stop before Reykjahlíð.

Day 5 — Mývatn to Akureyri, 120 km

The short day, and the one to protect. The lake loop (Routes 848 and 1, 36 km) passes Dimmuborgir and Skútustaðagígar and takes a morning; the ledger counts it. Goðafoss is beside Route 1 at the Bárðardalur junction, half an hour with a paved path on each bank. Akureyri is 36 km on, through the Vaðlaheiði tunnel, which has a toll paid online within 24 hours. Arrive by mid-afternoon with time for a swimming pool and a shop that is open.

Day 6 — Akureyri to Borgarnes, 325 km

The longest driving day by distance: four hours of mostly empty road. Öxnadalsheiði (540 m) and Holtavörðuheiði (400 m) are the two passes, and they are the first places in the ledger to close in a winter storm; in summer they are a non-event. Varmahlíð and Blönduós have fuel. Hvammstangi, 6 km off Route 1 and counted in the day, is the one real town between Blönduós and Borgarnes. Staðarskáli, at the head of Hrútafjörður, is the roadhouse everyone stops at. Borgarnes has fuel, two supermarkets and a pool.

Day 7 — Borgarnes to Keflavík airport, 115 km

The Hvalfjörður tunnel has been toll-free since 2018. Reykjavík is 66 km from Borgarnes by the Wikipedia count (measured from the city edge; add ten for the centre), then 48 km on Route 41 to the airport. Returning a rental car, with the fuel stop and the shuttle, takes an hour on top of the drive. The Blue Lagoon is 20 km from the terminal and makes an evening-flight day shorter; it is a neutral mention, not part of the ledger.

What it costs

The ledger shows fuel as a number because fuel is the one cost with a dated public price: 1,555 km at 7.5 l/100 km is 117 litres, multiplied by the per-litre figure on the Iceland country page (checked 1 November 2026 on bensinverd.is). Everything else is a band. Accommodation in the mid band for two means guesthouses and small hotels with a shared or private bathroom, booked by March for June; the upper band is the same towns with a restaurant attached. Food in the mid band assumes one cooked meal a day and supermarket lunches. The fees that exist on this route: paid car parks at Seljalandsfoss, Reynisfjara, Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón; the Vaðlaheiði tunnel toll; the Stokksnes entry fee. All are posted on the sign or the operator's site and none is large.

What goes wrong

Wind, before anything else. The passes on Day 6, the sands on Day 2 and the whole of the east coast on Day 3 are where umferdin.is posts gust warnings, and a rental car's doors are the first casualty; safetravel.is lists "check weather and road conditions in the morning, and a few times during the day" among its twelve rules for a reason. From October to April add ice, daylight (under five hours in Reykjavík at the solstice; the ledger shows the figure for your date) and the fact that Routes 862 and 923 may not be ploughed. The honest winter version of this loop drops Stuðlagil and Dettifoss, keeps the car on Route 1, and starts with the north while the forecast is clear. There is no ferry in this journey, so the single timetable risk is the flight home.

Variations

With ten days, add Snæfellsnes and a second night in the east; that journey is on the site with its own ledger, and the comparison page sets the two side by side. With five days, do not attempt the loop: the South Coast and Golden Circle journey reaches Jökulsárlón and comes back. With seven days in winter, drive the south coast to Höfn and return the same way, which is the same number of nights with half the exposure.

Questions people ask

Is seven days enough for the Ring Road?
Enough to drive it and sleep in six different towns, not enough to linger. Four days carry more than three hours of driving before any stop, and one weather closure costs you a night somewhere else. Ten days is the comfortable version.
Which day is the longest?
Day 6, Akureyri to Borgarnes, at about 325 km and four hours of driving. Day 2, Vík to Höfn, is shorter on the clock but has the most stops, so it is the longest day in practice.
Clockwise or anticlockwise?
Anticlockwise puts the south coast first, when you are freshest and the stops are densest, and leaves the long empty stretch across the north-west for the end. In winter the argument reverses: do the north first while the forecast is good.
Do I need a 4x4?
Not for this route between May and September. Every road in the ledger is paved except the Route 923 spur to Stuðlagil and the short approach to Hvammstangi. In winter the question is tyres, not drive wheels.
How much fuel will the car use?
At the assumed 7.5 l/100 km the 1,555 km burn about 117 litres. The ledger multiplies that by the dated per-litre price on the Iceland country page; change the consumption figure if your car is larger.
Where are the fuel gaps?
Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Höfn (about 200 km with only the small Fagurhólsmýri and Freysnes stations on Route 1 between them, per bensinverd.is on 1 November 2026) and Egilsstaðir to Mývatn (165 km). Fill up at both ends of those.
