Reykjavík

On a route plan Reykjavík is the depot, not the destination. It is the one place in Iceland where you can buy every piece of kit you forgot, where fuel competition is real, and where the supermarkets are open late and fully stocked. Use it that way: a night at either end of the loop, a big shop, a full tank, and then out.
The practical line, checked on the operators' own store lists today: Bónus has twenty capital-area stores (bonus.is), Krónan another eighteen (kronan.is), and Olís and ÓB stations are spread across the city (olis.is). Fill the car and the cool bag here, because prices climb the moment you leave the capital region and some Ring Road towns have only one small shop.
Timing matters more than sights. Leaving the city westbound at 08:00 on a weekday puts you in commuter traffic on Vesturlandsvegur; before 07:00 or after 09:30 is smoother. Eastbound over Hellisheiði is quieter, but that pass is the first place winter weather closes a road, so check umferdin.is before committing to the South Coast in a storm.
Sleep here is the most expensive on the island, so a Ring Road budget usually gives the capital one night, not three. The municipal pools are the cheap, warm, local alternative to the spa lagoons and make a good first evening after a long flight. Phone signal and card payment are universal; cash is not needed anywhere on the route.
