Seljalandsfoss is the first big stop on an anticlockwise Ring Road and the one where most itineraries lose their timing. The car park is a few hundred metres off the Ring Road on route 249 and the walk to the falls is five minutes, so the stop itself is short; what eats the hour is the queue to walk behind the water and the crowd at the lip.
On a journey it works best as an early-morning or late-evening stop. Coaches arrive from mid-morning until late afternoon. Before 08:30 or after 19:00 in summer you can have the loop to yourself, and in June the light behind the curtain is at its best late.
The practical line: a paid car park with toilets; the amount on the machine could not be confirmed on an official page today, so budget for it and read the sign. Nothing else is sold at the falls beyond a seasonal kiosk. The nearest fuel and supermarket are back at Hvolsvöllur, and the next are at Vík, so do not expect to top up here.
Safety is simple but real: the path behind the falls is spray-soaked rock, closed when iced, and rangers close it without notice. A waterproof shell is not optional. The smaller Gljúfrabúi falls are a ten-minute walk north along the cliff and involve wading a shallow stream into a slot, fine in trainers you do not mind soaking.
