Stykkishólmur is the port that turns a Snæfellsnes trip into a Westfjords trip. The ferry Baldur sails from here across Breiðafjörður, via Flatey, to Brjánslækur, which saves the long drive round by Búðardalur and the Dalir and puts a car on the southern Westfjords road in an afternoon. The town is also the biggest on the peninsula, so it is where the shopping happens.

The practical line, confirmed on the operators' lists today: Bónus has a store (bonus.is) and Olís a fuel station (olis.is); other fuel brands may be present but were not confirmed on a station map today. For anyone taking the ferry, fill here: Brjánslækur has nothing, and the first Westfjords fuel is at Patreksfjörður or Flókalundur. There is a municipal pool, a campsite and toilets at the harbour.

Ferry status, from ferja.is today: Baldur has been in dry dock since mid-September 2026 and is expected back in late November 2026; until then the regular schedule is suspended and a passenger boat runs Stykkishólmur to Flatey only, on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with advance booking required. The normal cadence and the winter fares are in the Brjánslækur ferry entry. Check ferja.is before planning the crossing.

Timing: two and a half hours from Reykjavík, an hour and a half from Arnarstapi over the Vatnaleið pass. Quiet except on ferry mornings, when the queue of campers forms on the quay from an hour before departure.
