Day hike at Landmannalaugar: Laugahraun loop

The Laugahraun lava loop from the hut, about 5 km and 1–2 hours, plus 3 km up Brennisteinsalda; free to walk, 1,500 ISK to park, roads open about 20 June to 15 September.

The Laugahraun loop is the walk to do at Landmannalaugar if you have one day, and the answer to whether it fits is about the night, not the path. The loop itself is short: Ferðafélag Íslands, which runs the hut, gives about 5 km and one to two hours for "Laugahraun og Brennisteinsalda", fairly easy, with about 3 km more and some ascent if you go up Brennisteinsalda. From the hut it costs a morning. From Hella it costs a day of F-road. It suits anyone who can walk two hours on lava and scree; the summit suits anyone with another hour and a half and a head for loose ground.

The figures read today: the walk is free. Parking is a service fee collected by Parka, 1,500 ISK for a car up to five seats, 2,450 for six to nine, 750 for a motorcycle, charged around the clock, and from 20 June to 13 September 2026 anyone arriving by their own vehicle between 09:00 and 16:00 must have booked a space in advance; booking opened on 1 April for that season and bookings can be changed up to a week before. The FÍ hut is listed at 17,000 kr., sleeps 78 on two floors with gas stoves and running water, and has a warden in summer. FÍ says 4x4s can on average drive in from 20 June to 15 September, the Road Administration deciding each year. Trex's bus from Reykjavík City Hall leaves at 07:30 and arrives at 11:20, returning at 14:30, 18 June to 3 September, 15,900 ISK one way and 31,800 return; from Hella 14,900 and 29,800; children under 135 cm cannot travel. Other bus companies run the same route and are not compared.

The arithmetic for the ledger: on site, the loop with the summit at FÍ's figures is about 3.5 hours, so 240 minutes at the long end. The nearest sleep on the highlands journey is the hut itself, so the detour is zero; add the 30-minute buffer, here the car-park booking, and the walk costs a hut night 270 minutes. Without the summit it is about 150. From Hella, the last town, it is about two hours each way on F225 or F208 in a 4x4, which doubles the day. By bus the walking window is fixed: 11:20 to 14:30 is 190 minutes, enough for the loop and not for the summit.

The loop itself: from the hut across the footbridge, up through the obsidian blocks of Laugahraun on a built path, out onto the slope below Brennisteinsalda with its steam vents, and back round to the hot stream by the hut, where the walk ends in the water. The summit path leaves the Laugavegur partway up the gorge, is marked, and FÍ calls it accessible to most. Bláhnúkur opposite is the harder alternative, "challenging in places", about 10 km as a loop.

What goes wrong

The road, first. F225 and F208 open when the Road Administration says, not when the calendar does, and a June plan needs umferdin.is on the morning. Second, the car park: the camera system reads your plate, and a wrong registration at booking is a fine, not a warning. Third, weather on the summit: Brennisteinsalda is 881 m and the wind on the ridge is a different climate from the hut; the path is scree on the top section. Fourth, the hot stream: it is the reward and it is also where people lose an hour; put it after the walk, not before.

Alternatives on the same road

Skallahringur, about 15 km and six to eight hours on FÍ's page, for a full day; Grænihryggur, about 18 km and eight to ten hours with wading, for a long one. Þórsmörk, the other hut valley, has its own page here and its own bus.

Practical line: no fuel after Hella or Hvolsvöllur; toilets and showers at the hut's service block; a small shop in summer; phone signal at the hut and none in the lava.

Questions people ask

What is Laugahringur?
The name people use for the lava-field loop from the hut through Laugahraun and back below Brennisteinsalda. FÍ's page calls it 'Laugahraun og Brennisteinsalda': about 5 km and one to two hours, fairly easy, with about 3 km added if you climb Brennisteinsalda, where there is some ascent.
How hard is Brennisteinsalda?
FÍ's trail page gives 7 km, 3.5 hours and 300 m of climb for the summit from the hut, on a well-marked path 'accessible to most'. Bláhnúkur, the other summit, is 'challenging in places' and about 10 km as a loop back through Laugahraun, 2–3 hours on the overview page.
Can I do it as a day trip from Reykjavík?
By bus, yes: Trex's Bus 1 leaves City Hall at 07:30, arrives 11:20 and leaves at 14:30, which gives 3 hours 10 minutes for the loop without the summit. Fare 31,800 ISK return. By car it is about two hours each way on F225 or F208 from Hella and a 4x4.
Do I need to book the car park?
Yes, between 09:00 and 16:00 from 20 June to 13 September, per parka.is; outside those hours the fee applies but no booking. The camera reads your plate, so the registration must be right.

What this page adds

A 270-minute cost to a night at the hut, computed from FÍ's own 5 km plus 3 km figures at a walking pace of 1–2 hours for the loop and about 3.5 hours with the summit, zero detour, and a booking buffer — with the bus-based version that fixes the walking window at 3 hours 10 minutes.
