Seyðisfjörður matters to a Nordic journey for one reason: it is the only place a car can arrive in Iceland by sea. The Smyril Line ferry Norröna connects it with Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands and Hirtshals in Denmark, so anyone doing a multi-country drive enters or leaves Iceland here. The village is otherwise a pretty dead end at the bottom of a steep pass.
The practical line: the Fjarðarheiði pass from Egilsstaðir climbs to over 600 m and is the one road in; the Road Administration closes it in snow and wind, and the fjord has been hit by landslides, so build slack into any ferry-day plan and check umferdin.is the night before. Kjörbúðin has a store in the village (kjorbudin.is, confirmed today). Fuel is sold here but the operator could not be confirmed on a station map today; fill at Egilsstaðir. There is a pool and a campsite.
Ferry cadence: the sailing schedule on smyrilline.com loads dynamically and could not be read today; the 2026 and 2027 timetables are published as PDFs on that page and should be checked for the exact Seyðisfjörður day. Smyril Line's check-in page, read today, lists Seyðisfjörður check-in on Thursdays, 16:00 to 19:00, for 10 September to 19 November, with all passengers checked in at least one hour before departure. Smyril Line has stated that there is no Iceland sailing from late November to mid-March; confirm the current gap on the PDF.
Timing: 35 minutes from Egilsstaðir in good conditions. Quiet all week except ferry day.
