Rafting the Hvítá is the Golden Circle's summer water activity: the glacial river that falls over Gullfoss runs on downstream through the Brúarhlöð canyon, and a raft trip from the Drumbó base near Geysir covers it in about 90 minutes of grade II water. It suits a group of competent swimmers aged 11 and over, between May and September, who want something physical on a sightseeing day. It is not white-knuckle water, and it is not cheap.

The figures, read today on adventures.is, which sells the trip; the page says it is operated by a partner company: season May to September; three hours meet-on-location at Drumbó, or eight hours with pick-up from Reykjavík from 12:30; meet-on-location departures at 11:00 and 15:00, arriving 15 minutes early. Price from 22,990 ISK per adult in the page's structured data, displayed as "from 189 USD" on screen. Minimum age 11 with a guardian; every paddler must be able to swim. After the river there are showers, hot tubs and a sauna at the base; a lamb barbecue is an optional extra. The seller gives Drumbó as about 98 km from Reykjavík.

The arithmetic

On the Golden Circle day of the five-day South Coast and Golden Circle journey, the ledger runs Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss and Kerið. Gullfoss to Kerið direct is 53 km and about 48 minutes by OSRM on OpenStreetMap; via Drumbó it is 19 km plus 39 km, 21 plus 38 minutes, an 11-minute detour. With the three-hour tour, 15 minutes' early arrival and a 15-minute buffer, the river costs that day about 220 minutes, which means either Kerið or a long Þingvellir walk goes. With the Reykjavík pick-up, it is the seller's eight hours, a whole day instead of a Golden Circle.

What goes wrong

Season and water: no trips from October to April, and the trip runs on a glacial river whose level changes. Weather can cancel or change trips. Refunds and rescheduling are handled by the seller's customer care, and the page says tours run by partner companies follow the partner's own policy, so read the terms before paying. Pregnancy and the swimming requirement are addressed in the seller's FAQ; take them at face value.

Alternatives on the same road

The snowmobile from Gullfoss is the year-round adrenaline option on the same day. For a warm-water finish, the Secret Lagoon is 20 minutes south, and Friðheimar serves lunch on road 35.
