Friðheimar is the Golden Circle lunch that is also a sight: a working tomato greenhouse in Reykholt, Biskupstungur, where you eat soup at tables between the plants under the grow lights. It suits any Golden Circle day, families, and anyone who wants a meal that is not petrol-station food between Geysir and Kerið. It is a lunch place only: the kitchen closes at 16:00, and the menu is built round one crop.
The figures, read today on fridheimar.is: the kitchen is open every day 11:30 to 16:00; the small tomato shop and the bar 9:00 to 17:00; and Vínstofa, the wine bar and restaurant in an older greenhouse, 12:00 to 22:00 with its kitchen closing at 21:00. The tomato soup with bread from the buffet is 3,740 ISK, salad 3,090, ravioli 4,590, mussels 6,870, and the tomato desserts 2,250 ISK; add-on skewers for the soup are 990 (vegetable or cheese) or 1,470 ISK (chicken or seafood). Children five and under eat free from the kids' menu, ages six to fourteen half price. The menu says all prices are valid for 2026.
The arithmetic
On the Golden Circle day of the five-day South Coast and Golden Circle journey, Friðheimar sits on road 35, which most loops use on the way back from Gullfoss towards Kerið and Selfoss. Gullfoss to Kerið direct is 53 km and about 48 minutes by OSRM on OpenStreetMap; via Friðheimar it is 25 km plus 28 km, 24 plus 25 minutes, a one-minute detour. With a 75-minute allowance for the meal and a 15-minute buffer for the table, lunch costs the day about 90 minutes. For a family of two adults and two children aged 6 to 14 having soup, that is 7,480 ISK for the adults plus two half-price children's meals. The same stop works on the ten-day Ring Road only if you add a Golden Circle, which that route does not.
What goes wrong
The 16:00 kitchen close: a Golden Circle day that starts late will reach Reykholt after it. Without a booking, lunchtime can mean a wait. The name trap: there are two Reykholts in Iceland; this one is postcode 806, on road 35, not the Borgarfjörður village of the same name in the West.
Alternatives on the same loop
Fontana at Laugarvatn has a bistro and the rye bread baked in the ground. The Secret Lagoon at Flúðir is 20 minutes away for a soak after lunch. For something active on the same afternoon, Hvítá rafting runs from May to September from a base nearby.

What this page adds
A computed one-minute detour — Gullfoss to Kerið is 48 minutes direct and 49 via Friðheimar (OSRM on OpenStreetMap) — so lunch costs the Golden Circle day 90 minutes (a 75-minute meal allowance plus a 15-minute table buffer), and a family-of-four soup lunch priced from today's menu: 2 × 3,740 + 2 half-price kids' meals.
