The outlet glaciers below Skaftafell are where most visitors set foot on Vatnajökull, and on a route plan a guided walk is the three-to-six-hour block that turns a Skaftafell stop into a Skaftafell day. Several operators run from the national park car park and from huts along the Ring Road between Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón; none is recommended here, and the walks are similar in shape: a short transfer to the ice edge, kit fitting, two to three hours on the ice.
Safety is the point of this entry, and the wording is from safetravel.is, read today: "You should never go on a glacier without experience or the proper equipment"; "Hiring a certified glacier guide with proper knowledge of the area is highly recommended!"; "It's important to be aware of crevasse areas and know how to avoid them", and "crevasses can appear with limited warning signs". The park's own line for the area is that "Outside of the summer months, conditions can change rapidly". In practice the glacier tongues are not for unguided walking at any season, and the ice caves are a winter-only, guided-only product.
The practical line: parking is the Skaftafell regional fee, 1,110 ISK for a car up to five seats, paid by plate; toilets at the visitor centre; no fuel in the park, the nearest at Freysnes just east (operator not confirmed today). Book the walk for the morning so the afternoon is free for Jökulsárlón, or the reverse; the Ring Road between the two is about an hour. Phone signal is fine at the car parks and absent on the ice.
Quiet months are May and September; July walks sell out.
