South Coast guide: every stop in minutes from Vík and from Reykjavík
Seljalandsfoss to Jökulsárlón: ten stops with road distance from Vík and from Reykjavík, fees read 1 November 2026, and the ledger days that string them together.
The South Coast is the stretch of Route 1 from Hveragerði to Jökulsárlón: waterfalls off cliffs, black beaches, glacier tongues and, at the far end, a lagoon full of icebergs. It is not a day trip from Reykjavík beyond Vík. Reynisfjara is 188 km from the capital and Jökulsárlón 380 km, nearly five hours each way at legal speed. Sleep on the coast, at Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur or Höfn, and everything from Seljalandsfoss to the lagoon is within two and a half hours of a bed. The table measures each stop from both bases, so you can see where the line between day trip and overnight falls.
The table
Road distance is OSRM on OpenStreetMap from the town's coordinates to the stop, computed 1 November 2026; minutes at 80 km/h, rounded up to five. Fees were read on 1 November 2026; Parka adds an 89 ISK transaction fee to each payment.

Fees: parka.is (Skógafoss, Reynisfjara, Fjaðrárgljúfur), vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is (Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón) and herjolfur.is, read 1 November 2026. Vegagerðin's own distance tool gives Vík–Jökulsárlón as 193 km, the same as OSRM. The 63 minutes at Jökulsárlón is this site's computed minimum from the park's published walk times, in the Jökulsárlón post.
Reading the table
Up to Skógafoss is a day trip from Reykjavík. Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are 100 and 120 minutes from the capital. A day there and back with both stops is about five and a half hours, which fits even a November day. Reynisfjara and Vík are the edge. At 145–155 minutes each way, a Reykjavík day trip to the black beach is five hours of driving, and in December there are 4 h 36 min of daylight at Vík on the 15th (NOAA solar equations, computed). Beyond Vík you need a night on the coast. Skaftafell is 250 minutes from Reykjavík and 110 from Vík. Jökulsárlón is 290 and 145.
The stops, briefly
Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are the two roadside falls. One has a path behind the water and the other a staircase to its top. Both paths close when iced. The waterfalls guide has the detail.
Reynisfjara is the black beach west of Vík, and the most dangerous stop on the coast. Safetravel's Black Beach Safety page names the two hazards: sneaker waves, which surge far beyond the ordinary waves with no warning, and rocks falling from the cliff. It runs three levels. At yellow, stay alert. At orange, keep at least 25 m from the sea. At red, the beach is closed and only the viewing area is open. On 1 November 2026 the page said storms and high waves had restricted the beach to the viewpoint.
Sólheimajökull is a glacier tongue 25 minutes from Vík, walked only with a guide. On 9 June 2026 Veðurstofa Íslands issued a notice of increased hazard from changing conditions at the glacier's margin. The glacier walk page has the tours.
Vík is the village every ledger sleeps in. It has fuel, a supermarket, the Katla ice cave departures and an indoor volcano stop: the capital has Volcano Express in Harpa and the Lava Show on Grandi, and the Lava Show runs a second venue here at Víkurbraut 5. When Route 1 closes either side in a storm, it is where the coast waits.
Fjaðrárgljúfur is a canyon reached by 3 km of gravel road, with a rim path of about 2 km return. The path closes in the spring thaw and after heavy rain to protect the moss.
Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón are Vatnajökull National Park's two fee areas on the road. Pay at Skaftafell first, and Jökulsárlón is half price the same day. Skaftafell's Svartifoss loop is two hours. Jökulsárlón's amphibian boats run until mid-November (icelagoon.is, 2026 prices: 7,100 ISK adult).
On the journeys
The South Coast and Golden Circle ledger gives the coast three days. Day 3 runs Reykjavík to Vík, 205 km. Day 4 goes Vík to Jökulsárlón and back to Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 330 km, the longest day on any of this site's south ledgers. Day 5 drives back to Keflavík. The 7-day and 10-day ledgers cover it in Days 1 and 2 on the way east. The ferry journey does it twice, out to Höfn on Day 10 and back to Vík on Day 11.
Questions
Can I do the South Coast as a day trip from Reykjavík?
To Skógafoss, comfortably: 120 minutes each way. To Reynisfjara and Vík, only in the long-light months, at about five hours of driving. Beyond Vík, no: Jökulsárlón is 380 km from the capital.
Where should I stay on the South Coast?
Vík for the western half, with Reynisfjara 10 minutes away and Skógafoss 30. Kirkjubæjarklaustur or Höfn for the eastern half, with Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón. The ledgers on this site use Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur and Höfn for exactly that reason.
Is Reynisfjara safe?
Only from well back on the sand. Safetravel's three levels go from yellow (stay alert) to orange (at least 25 m from the sea) to red (beach closed, viewing area only), and on 1 November 2026 the beach was open only from the viewpoint. Check the page on the day.
