Best waterfalls in Iceland, and what each one costs in minutes
Eleven waterfalls with the walk from the car park, the fee, the ledger day that passes them, and out-and-back minutes from the nearest ledger bed, computed 1 Nov 2026.
Iceland's waterfalls come in two kinds: the ones the Ring Road drives past, and the ones you have to walk to. Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Goðafoss are a few minutes from the car and on the road of a ledger day, so they cost nothing but the stop. Svartifoss, Hengifoss and Dynjandi are worth the walk, and each takes an hour to two hours of a day. Gullfoss and Dettifoss are big enough to be the point of a day on their own. The table below prices each in minutes. It shows what a waterfall costs if you go out and back from the nearest bed on one of this site's ledgers, and which ledger day passes it anyway.
The table
Drive minutes are OSRM distance on OpenStreetMap from the nearest ledger night at 80 km/h, rounded up to five (computed 1 November 2026). The stay is the shortest the official page or this site's stop page gives. Out-and-back = two drives + the stay.
| Waterfall | Nearest ledger night | Drive | Shortest stay, and its source | Out-and-back | Fee, read 1 Nov 2026 | Ledger day that passes it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seljalandsfoss | Hvolsvöllur | 20 | 30 min (stop page) | 70 | car park: check the sign | 7- and 10-day Day 1; South Coast Day 3 |
| Goðafoss | Akureyri | 30 | 20 min (stop page) | 80 | no official fee page | 7-day Day 5; North Day 2 |
| Skógafoss | Vík | 30 | 30 min (stop page) | 90 | 1,000 ISK per car, 5 hours | 7- and 10-day Day 1; South Coast Day 3 |
| Kirkjufellsfoss | Stykkishólmur | 35 | 20 min (stop page) | 90 | check the sign | 10-day Day 8 |
| Hraunfossar | Borgarnes | 45 | 30 min (stop page) | 120 | check the sign | none |
| Hengifoss | Egilsstaðir | 25 | 40–60 min walk each way (east.is) | 130 | none stated | none; a half-day from the Egilsstaðir nights |
| Dynjandi | Ísafjörður | 45 | about 15 min climb each way (stop page) | 135 | charged; amount on the sign | Westfjords Day 3 |
| Dettifoss | Reykjahlíð | 55 | 1 km walk each way (park page) | 170 | free | 7-day Day 4; 10-day Day 6; North Day 3 |
| Gullfoss | Hvolsvöllur | 75 | 30 min (stop page) | 180 | 1,080 ISK + 89 per 4 hours | South Coast Day 2 |
| Svartifoss, Skaftafell | Kirkjubæjarklaustur | 55 | 2 h on trail S2, 5.8 km loop (park page) | 230 | 1,110 ISK park fee | 7- and 10-day Day 2; South Coast Day 4 |
| Glymur | Borgarnes | 40 | trail time not read | 80 + the hike | not read | none |
Fees: parka.is for Skógafoss and Gullfoss; vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is for Skaftafell and Dettifoss; ust.is for Dynjandi; all read 1 November 2026. The Hvalfjörður page that should describe the Glymur trail returned HTTP 404 that day, so no trail time is given.
The roadside three
Seljalandsfoss drops from a cliff above Route 1, and a path runs behind the curtain of water. The path is wet, rocky and often closed in winter when iced. The car park is paid, but no official page carried the amount on 1 November 2026, so read the sign. Skógafoss is 30 km further east, a wide fall with a long open staircase to a platform at the top; the stairs close when iced. Both are on the first day of the 7- and 10-day ledgers. Goðafoss sits beside Route 1 between Akureyri and Mývatn, with car parks on both banks and short paths on each. It costs the North ledger almost nothing, because Day 2 drives past it.
The walks
Svartifoss is the waterfall of Skaftafell. Vatnajökull National Park's trail S2, Svartifoss–Sjónarsker–Sel, is a 5.8 km circle of about two hours, graded easy. The park's 1,110 ISK fee for a car of up to five seats is valid until midnight. If you also pay at Jökulsárlón the same day, the second fee is half price. Hengifoss is reached on an easy path from the road; East Iceland's page gives 40–60 minutes from the car park to the waterfall. Dynjandi's rocky, uneven path climbs about 15 minutes to the main fall, and Day 3 of the Westfjords ledger stops there.
The big two
Gullfoss is the end of the Golden Circle, 10 km past Geysir. Parka charges 1,080 ISK per car for four hours, plus an 89 ISK transaction fee. The lower path to the rock beside the falls closes when iced. Dettifoss is reached from Route 862 on the west side, paved from the Ring Road, with a walk of about 1 km each way over rough ground. There is no parking fee on the park's page. The east side, on gravel Route 864, closes from the first autumn snow until spring.
In winter
Six of the eleven have a path that closes or ices in winter: Seljalandsfoss's loop behind the fall, Skógafoss's stairs, Gullfoss's lower path, Dynjandi, Goðafoss's west bank and Hraunfossar's paths. Daylight is the other limit: on 15 December 2027, Reykjavík has 4 h 13 min of it and Akureyri 3 h 12 min (NOAA solar equations, computed). The daylight scorecard has the rest of the year.
Questions
Which waterfall should I see if I only see one?
If you are driving the south coast, Skógafoss: a 30-minute stay from a car park beside Route 1 that costs 1,000 ISK. If you are on the Golden Circle, Gullfoss. If you have two hours and good boots, Svartifoss is the one that rewards the walk.
Can you still walk behind Seljalandsfoss?
In summer, yes, on a wet and rocky path. In winter the path behind the falls is often closed when iced; the stop page records this, and the sign at the car park says so on the day.
Are the waterfalls free?
The water is free. Several car parks are not: Skógafoss 1,000 ISK, Gullfoss 1,080 plus a transaction fee, Skaftafell 1,110 per car (all read 1 November 2026). Dettifoss had no parking fee on the park's page that day.
