Jökulsárlón: the minimum stop, the fee and the boat prices, dated
1,110 ISK to park, 7,100 ISK for the amphibian boat, 2 h 10 min from Vík and 44 min from Höfn (Vegagerðin), and a minimum stop built from the park's own walk times.
Sixty-three minutes without a boat, about two hours with the amphibian boat, two hours thirty-five with the Zodiac. That is the least Jökulsárlón takes once the car is parked, computed below from the national park's published walk times and the operators' durations, and it is why the Ring Road ledgers on this site give the lagoon 60 minutes and not 30: the hour is the lagoon shore and the beach with nothing else, and a boat is a second hour.
The fee
Vatnajökull National Park's price list (vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is, read 1 November 2026) charges a regional fee at Jökulsárlón and Skaftafell: 1,110 ISK for a car of up to five seats, 1,440 ISK for six to nine seats, 450 ISK for a motorcycle, 2,770 to 9,400 for buses by size. It is valid until midnight on the day it is paid, and there is a 50 per cent discount if another fee area of the park was paid earlier the same day, which on a Vík-to-Höfn day means Skaftafell first and Jökulsárlón at half price. Holders of a disabled parking card can ask for an exemption by e-mail before driving in. The page does not say when the list took effect; it cites regulation 324/2025.
One operational note from the same site: the main car park was closed for works from 2 to 7 October 2026, with parking moved to the Fellsfjara car parks and visitors on boat tours told to arrive earlier and walk. It reopened; the point is that the car park is not a fixed quantity.
The boats, priced for 2026
Jökulsárlón ehf (icelagoon.is, read 1 November 2026, prices "valid for year 2026"): the amphibian boat, 30–40 minutes on the water, 7,100 ISK for adults 13 and over, 3,500 for children 6–12, free under 6, season May to November, with hours of 10:00–17:00 in May, 09:00–19:00 June to September and 10:00–17:00 from October to 15 November; departures "usually at least every 30 minutes" from June to August; no last departure time is printed; advance booking is "recommended, especially during the summer season". The Zodiac, 1 h 15 min, 16,600 ISK for adults and 8,300 for children 10–12, minimum height 130 cm, May to October. The second operator, Ice Lagoon (icelagoon.com), sells a Zodiac tour "from 16,900 ISK", 1 h 15 min on the water and about two hours in all, May to October; its page carries no price year. No 2027 prices were published by either on 1 November 2026.
The drive, from the road authority
Vegagerðin's distance tool (vegagerdin.is, read 1 November 2026) gives Vík to Jökulsárlón as 193 km, all of it paved, 2 h 10 min by the authority's own timing, and Höfn to Jökulsárlón as 65 km, paved, 44 minutes. At the 80 km/h this site uses for its ledgers the figures are 2 h 25 min and 49 minutes. OSRM on OpenStreetMap, the ledgers' other source, gives 193 km and 65 km. In the seven- and ten-day Ring Road ledgers (/journeys/iceland-ring-road-7-days, /journeys/iceland-ring-road-10-days-snaefellsnes) the lagoon sits in Day 2, Vík to Höfn, 270 km with 60 minutes allowed; in the South Coast ledger (/journeys/iceland-south-coast-golden-circle-5-days) it is the turning point of the 330 km Day 4.
The minimum stop, computed
The park's Jökulsárlón page lists two marked routes: B1 Jökulsárlón, 1.2 km, 15 minutes, easy; B2 Eystri-Fellsfjara, the beach where the ice washes up, 1 km, 40 minutes, easy. The beach car park is across the Route 1 bridge from the lagoon car park; the drive across is about 1 km. The inputs, then:
| Element | minutes | source |
|---|---|---|
| Park, pay by plate, toilets | 5 | park price list (fee by plate camera) |
| Lagoon shore, route B1 | 15 | park page, 1.2 km |
| Drive across the bridge | 3 | about 1 km |
| Beach, route B2 | 40 | park page, 1 km on sand |
| Minimum without a boat | 63 | |
| Amphibian boat | 40 | operator, 30–40 min |
| Pre-boarding | 15 | assumption: ticket bought in advance, at the kiosk 15 min early |
| Minimum with the amphibian boat | 118 | |
| Zodiac instead | 75 + 15 | operator, 1 h 15 min |
| Minimum with the Zodiac | 153 |
The 15 minutes of pre-boarding is the one number not read on a page; the operator's page says only that advance booking is recommended. In July and August the queue for the car park and the cafe can add more than that. The ledgers' 60 minutes is the first row and the honest reading is that a boat does not fit inside a 270 km Ring Road day without taking the hour from Skaftafell.
Fuel, and a correction
There is no fuel at the lagoon. The ledgers' notes say there is no station on Route 1 between Skaftafell and Höfn, and the station list on bensinverd.is for 1 November 2026 says otherwise: it lists Orkan at Freysnes, by Skaftafell, and N1 at Fagurhólsmýri, which lies between Skaftafell and the lagoon, as well as N1 and Olís in Höfn. The ledger notes will be corrected at the next re-check; until then fill at Kirkjubæjarklaustur westbound and Höfn eastbound as they say, and treat Fagurhólsmýri as the reserve.
