Greenland: what you can actually do, month by month

No roads between towns, so every activity starts at a harbour, a runway or the 25 km ice-sheet track. Operator months and prices read 1 November 2026, with the light.

What you can actually do in Greenland is decided by where you land and in which month, because there is no road from one town to the next. In Kangerlussuaq you can be on the ice sheet in five hours from 735 DKK on Albatros Arctic Circle's Point 660 trip, offered February to November. In Nuuk you can take a fjord boat in any month, Visit Greenland says, and see whales from June to October. In Ilulissat you walk to the icefjord in any month and sail among its icebergs in summer. In December Ilulissat has no sunrise; in June neither Kangerlussuaq nor Ilulissat has a sunset.

The light, computed

NOAA solar equations, flat horizon, hours of sun on the 15th, computed 1 November 2026.

Computed windows: Ilulissat has no sunrise from 30 November 2026 to 11 January 2027 and no sunset from 21 May to 23 July 2027; Kangerlussuaq has no sunset from 3 June to 10 July 2027 and keeps a short sun all winter; Nuuk, just south of the Arctic Circle, has neither. Nuuk's light in December is almost exactly Reykjavík's (4 h 13 min).

The calendar

Months as printed on the operator's or tourist board's page, read 1 November 2026. "Visit Greenland" rows are the board's seasons, not a timetable.

The Albatros page adds that "The displayed price is for adults (+11 years)" and that some tours have a children's price it does not show.

Kangerlussuaq: the ice sheet by road

Kangerlussuaq is the exception to the no-roads rule. Visit Greenland describes "the 25km road from Kangerlussuaq to the IceCap", built by Volkswagen for cold-weather testing; you do not drive it yourself, the operators do. Point 660 is the classic trip, five hours, 735 DKK; the eight-hour full day runs from April to October at 1,095 DKK. The town's own bus costs 12 DKK, cash only. Visit Greenland lists the 160 km Arctic Circle Trail to Sisimiut as starting here, with hiking from May to September. See Kangerlussuaq ice-sheet walk.

Nuuk: the capital's fjord

Visit Greenland's Nuuk page names "a general fjord tour that lasts a few hours", full-day trips to the icefjord and private charters, and says many boat tours "operate all year round"; it prints no prices. Nuuk Water Taxi's site returned an empty page today, so a fjord fare is a check item; this site's Nuuk fjord boat page carries what could be read. On land, the Greenland National Museum and Archives opens 10:00–17:00 daily from 15 April to 15 September and 12:00–16:00 from 16 September to 14 April, closed 24–26 and 31 December and 1 January, adult 100 DKK, students and children free (nka.gl, read 1 November 2026). Greenland Airports says bus route 3 serves the airport daily, the last bus leaving at 17:11; after that it is Nuuk Taxi or Taxagut.

Ilulissat: the icefjord

The boardwalk to the icefjord costs nothing and needs no season. The boats among the icebergs are a summer business, and the local operators' sites printed no prices today; Icefjord boat from Ilulissat sets out what was readable and from whom. The town's new international airport and its transfers are on this site's Ilulissat stop page.

What you cannot do

Drive between towns, hire a car for a tour of the country, or connect a Greenland flight straight onto a long-haul departure with confidence. Everything between settlements is by air or by sea, and the Greenland add-on ledger has no road kilometres at all for that reason. Fog closes airports for a day at a time; the ledger's FAQ allows a Reykjavík night either side.

The Iceland decision

Greenland from Iceland is a five-day add-on by air from Keflavík, not a replacement week. It changes what the trip contains rather than its shape: an ice sheet you stand on, a fjord full of icebergs, and settlements with no road out. In summer it pairs with an Iceland ring-road fortnight; in March it pairs with a winter week, when Nuuk, Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat all have eleven and a half hours of sun and Kangerlussuaq still has dog sledding. In December, Ilulissat is dark, and the add-on is a Nuuk-only trip. For the flights and what is actually on sale for 2027, see Greenland from Iceland in 2027. A Copenhagen start is the other gateway; the stopover ledger covers that city.

  1. Greenland add-on from Reykjavík, 5 days

Keflavík to Nuuk, Nuuk to Ilulissat and back by air: no roads, no car, 7 hours 40 of flying, two towns, one icefjord. It changes an Iceland trip's length, not its shape.
