Point 660 is where a visitor can step off a vehicle track onto the Greenland ice sheet, and it is the reason most people stop in Kangerlussuaq rather than only change planes there. The tour read today, from Greenland by Topas, drives past the Russell Glacier through tundra to Point 660, 660 metres above sea level, for a walk on the ice; it takes 5 hours, runs February to November and is listed at DKK 735, but that seller says it sells its Kangerlussuaq tours only within packages (greenlandbytopas.com, 1 November 2026). The local operator's site did not resolve, so no bookable single-tour fare is stated here. It suits a traveller with a day in Kangerlussuaq; it does not suit a same-day connection.
What the pages say: Greenland by Topas grades the Point 660 walk 2 of 5, mentions the tundra, the mountains, the area's American military history and wildlife on the way, and notes that the ice sheet covers about 80 per cent of Greenland. It also lists a 4-hour Russell Glacier tour at DKK 735, a full day on the ice with crampons and lunch at DKK 1,095 from April to October, and a night on the ice cap from mid-March to mid-October. Visit Greenland says Kangerlussuaq is one of the few places where you can get this close to the ice sheet, that the ice is a year-round visit, and that most excursions leave town by road vehicle, naming Albatros Arctic Circle, Arctic Ice Tours and Kang Mini Tours for private transport.
The arithmetic
The tour is 300 minutes including the drive, since you do not drive yourself. Add a 30-minute buffer for the pick-up and the tour costs a Kangerlussuaq day 330 minutes. The distance, computed: Point 660's OpenStreetMap position is about 32 km in a straight line north-east of the airport; the track winds, so the drive is longer. On the Greenland add-on journey (/journeys/greenland-add-on-from-reykjavik-5-days) the route goes Nuuk to Ilulissat; Kangerlussuaq fits as a night on the Copenhagen side, whose direct flight the stop page dates to February to October 2026.
The light, computed with the NOAA equations at Kangerlussuaq: 698 minutes of sun on 15 March, the whole day on 21 June, 793 minutes on 15 September.
What goes wrong
Weather on the ice, first: wind or low cloud on open ice cuts a walk short, and no refund rule was read today, so ask. The season, second: February to November on the seller's list, nothing in December or January. The price, third, which could not be read on a bookable page today. Flights, fourth: Kangerlussuaq is a hub, and a delay on the way in can take the tour day with it.
Alternatives on the same road
The Russell Glacier front, the same seller's 4-hour tour, is ice you look at rather than stand on. In Iceland, the Sólheimajökull glacier walk is the guided walk on a glacier tongue beside the South Coast road, with no flight in between.
