The icefjord boat is the reason most people fly to Ilulissat, and on the Greenland add-on's two nights here it is the one timed thing. The sailing leaves the town harbour, runs south along the coast to the mouth of Kangia, where the bergs from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier ground on the shallow sill, and comes back; about two and a half hours. It suits every party that can get on a small boat; it does not suit a plan that needs a known price, because none of the local operators' pages gave one today.
What could be read: a Danish-Greenlandic tour seller's page lists an "Icefjord Sailing" in Ilulissat at 2.5 hours "from 105 EUR per person" and a three-hour whale safari from EUR 170, with the line that a cancelled excursion is refunded in full and that the midnight sun lasts from late May through late July; its Ilulissat page puts the walk to Sermermiut at about 30 to 45 minutes from the town centre. What could not be read: the operators' own pages. World of Greenland's site, which is the main local operator, described its hotel and lodges and mentioned sailing among icebergs, with no tour page or price; Disko Line, the other, returned empty pages on two addresses. Two or three companies sell the same sailing from the same harbour and none is recommended; the figure here is from a seller, in euros, and the band is "check" for that reason.
The arithmetic for the ledger: 150 minutes on the water, no detour because the harbour is in the town where the journey sleeps, and the 30-minute booking buffer: 180 minutes. The add-on's day four is a full Ilulissat day with nothing else in the row, so the boat is the afternoon or the late evening of it and the morning is the boardwalk. The flights in and out, which the ledger carries, are the real cost of being here.
The boat is a small passenger vessel, open at the stern and enclosed forward, and it goes as close to the bergs as the skipper judges; they roll and calve, and the distance is the skipper's decision, not the passengers'. The fjord mouth is where the ice stacks up against the sill before it drifts into Disko Bay, and it is the densest ice most visitors will ever sail through.
What goes wrong
The weather first: wind at the harbour mouth, fog in Disko Bay and, in early summer, ice packed into the harbour itself; the operators cancel and the seller's refund line applies to its bookings. The season second: no page read today gave start and end dates for the sailings, and a May or September plan should be made with the operator directly. The flights third: the new international airport opened on 29 October 2026 and Air Greenland lists a weekly direct Copenhagen flight; the add-on comes through Nuuk and a missed connection costs the boat day. The price fourth, and the point of the flag on this entry: book it on the operator's site, in kroner, and date the figure in your ledger.
Alternatives on the same road
The Sermermiut boardwalk, free, 30 to 45 minutes each way from town with the Icefjord Centre at its start, is the view from above and the one every visitor should do first. Longer walks on the marked routes south of the fjord mouth fill a second day. Helicopter flights over the glacier front and the day trip to the Eqi glacier are sold by the same operators at several times the price and were not read.
Practical line: no road out of town; taxi or hotel shuttle from the airport; shops and a supermarket in town; the harbour is a walk from any hotel. Dress for the water, which is colder than the town in July.

The arithmetic
- Time needed
- 2.5–3 h
- Adds to a driving day
- 3 h 00 min, door to door
- Price
- Price not published — The local boat operators' sites (worldofgreenland.com, diskoline.gl) returned pages with no tour prices or empty content today. A Danish-Greenlandic tour seller, greenland-travel.com, lists an 'Icefjord Sailing' at 2.5 hours from EUR 105 and a 3-hour whale safari from EUR 170 (read 2026-11-01); no DKK figure and no operator's own page, so the band is 'check'.
- Season
- Summer for the boats, with the midnight sun 'from late May through late July' on the seller's page; no season dates for the sailings themselves were readable; the Sermermiut boardwalk is walkable all year
- Book ahead
- Book before you fly; the seller's page promises a full refund if an excursion is cancelled, which is the weather case
- Best time
- The late-evening departure in June and July, when the sun is low on the ice and the day boats are back
- From
- Ilulissat

What this page adds
A 180-minute cost to an Ilulissat night with no detour — the harbour is in the town — computed from the 2.5-hour sailing and a booking buffer, set against the free alternative the same page gives a figure for: the 30–45-minute walk to Sermermiut.
