A boat into the fjord is the reason to spend a full day in Nuuk, because the town has no road out and the fjord is where the country starts. The boats leave from the harbour all year: Visit Greenland, the government-owned tourist board, says the fjord does not freeze in winter. One seller's list, read today, prices the trips from a 2-hour fjord-and-fishing outing at DKK 949 to a 6-hour ice-fjord day at DKK 2,295 (greenlandbytopas.com, 1 November 2026). It suits the Greenland add-on journey's day two; it does not suit a traveller who will not spend that much, because Nuuk's free alternative is a hill.

What the pages say: Visit Greenland's listing for Nuuk Water Taxi describes heated cabin boats with a walk-around deck, local captains and guides, and the protection of humpback whales in the Nuuk fjord. Its Nuuk page gives June to October as the season for whale watching, boat tours and fishing, October to March for the northern lights. The seller's list: Ice fjord sailing, all year, about two hours each way to the ice fjord, 6 hours, DKK 2,295, coffee and tea included, bring your own lunch; whale watching, 3 to 4 hours, DKK 1,249, with a whale guarantee among the inclusions; Nuuk Fiord Adventure, all year, 2 hours, DKK 949; and a 4-to-5-hour trip at DKK 1,499 and an 8-hour hike-and-sail at DKK 2,395. The operator's own booking site, nuukwatertaxi.gl, showed nothing without script today, so its own fares and refund rules are not stated.

The arithmetic

The 2-hour trip, plus getting to the harbour and boarding, and a 30-minute buffer: 180 minutes from a Nuuk bed. The 6-hour ice-fjord day costs 420. On the Greenland add-on journey (/journeys/greenland-add-on-from-reykjavik-5-days) day two is the boat day, between the flight in and the flight to Ilulissat.

Per hour on the water, from the dated list: DKK 475 for the 2-hour trip, about 357 for whale watching at the midpoint of 3 to 4 hours, 383 for the ice fjord. The long day is the better rate and the larger sum. Daylight in Nuuk, computed with the NOAA equations: about 1,186 minutes on 15 July, 252 on 15 December, so a winter ice-fjord day starts and ends in the dark.

What goes wrong

Weather, first: wind on the outer fjord cancels or shortens trips, and there is no road alternative. The price source, second: the operator's own page could not be read, so check its fare when booking. Cold, third, on deck in any month. Flights, fourth: Nuuk weather holds aircraft too, so do not put the boat on the day you fly out.

Alternatives on the same road

Lille Malene (Quassussuaq), walkable from the suburbs all year with snowshoes or skis in winter, according to Visit Greenland, is the free view of the fjord. In Ilulissat, two days later on the same journey, the icefjord boat (/experiences/ilulissat-icefjord-boat) is the bigger ice.

Questions people ask

Who runs the boats?
Visit Greenland's listing describes Nuuk Water Taxi as the operator with the largest fleet of Targa boats in Nuuk, all heated cabin boats with a walk-around deck, plus a 36-passenger steel ship. Its own site could not be read today, so the prices here come from Greenland by Topas, which lists the same kind of trips.
Can I go in winter?
Yes. Visit Greenland says fjord excursions run all year because the fjord does not freeze, and the seller's list marks the ice-fjord sailing and the 2-hour trip as all year. Daylight in mid-December is about four hours (computed).
Are whales guaranteed?
The seller's whale-watching trip carries a whale guarantee in its list of inclusions; read the terms when booking. Visit Greenland notes that humpback whales are protected in the Nuuk fjord and visit in summer.
How does it compare with whale watching at Húsavík?
Húsavík's boat on this site is 12,990 ISK for an adult and costs a North Iceland day 210 minutes. Nuuk's whale trip is 3 to 4 hours in a fjord with ice, and Greenland is a flight away. If whales are the point, Húsavík is the easy answer; if Greenland is the point, take the boat.
