Viking Sushi is the Breiðafjörður islands sailing from Stykkishólmur harbour: about an hour and a half among the islands and rock formations of the bay, live sea creatures hauled up from the seabed, and a tasting of raw scallops and sea urchin minutes after they come aboard. It suits anyone sleeping in Stykkishólmur, families (children 16 and under sail free with their parents), and seafood eaters. It does not suit anyone who wants a full lunch or a whale: this is a short tasting cruise on the bay, run by Sæferðir, trading as Seatours.

The figures, read today on the operator's own site, saeferdir.is. Viking Sushi runs from May to October, lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and costs 12,900 ISK per person (read 2026-11-01). From November to April the operator lists the Scallop Experience instead: one hour, 11,500 ISK, the same scallops and sea urchin in smaller groups. Children aged 16 and under sail free with family; full price starts at 17; the free fare does not apply to school or organised children's groups. All trips leave Stykkishólmur harbour aboard Særún, a 28 m Norwegian-built vessel with space for 140 guests. The booking terms say the seafood tasting is included and is not a full meal, prices are per person, valid for the 2026 season, and advance booking is recommended. Departure times sit in the booking calendar; none were shown for November when it was read. One warning about addresses: the old seatours.is domain no longer belongs to the operator and loaded an unrelated betting site on 1 November 2026, so book only through saeferdir.is.

The arithmetic

On the ten-day Ring Road with Snæfellsnes, night 8 is in Stykkishólmur, so the boat costs no driving at all: 90 minutes on board, 15 minutes at the harbour before departure and a 15-minute buffer, about 120 minutes, which fits the evening of day 8 or the morning of day 9 before the drive to Reykjavík. The 15-minute arrival is this page's allowance; the operator does not publish a check-in time. As a day trip from a Borgarnes bed it is 99 km and about 90 minutes each way by OSRM on OpenStreetMap, so 180 minutes of driving plus the 120: about 300 minutes. On the six-day Westfjords loop, day 1 passes the same harbour for the Baldur ferry; the boat fits only if the sailing and the ferry leave enough slack between them.

What goes wrong

Weather: wind and sea state can stop a sailing. The operator's terms say that if it cannot provide the booked service it will offer an alternative of the same or higher standard or a full refund if preferred. Your own changes: rebooking more than 24 hours ahead is free; less than 24 hours ahead costs 3,000 ISK. Cancelling more than 24 hours ahead returns 95 %; 6 to 24 hours ahead, 50 %; less than five hours before departure, nothing (terms read 2026-11-01). Allergies: the tasting is raw shellfish and sea urchin; there is no alternative menu on the operator's pages.

Alternatives on the same road

The Flatey stopover uses the Baldur ferry from the same harbour to spend hours on the island itself. On the loop day, the Kirkjufellsfoss walk is 45 minutes west and the Djúpalónssandur walk is on the far side of the peninsula. For whales rather than islands, Húsavík and Reykjavík run the dedicated boats.
