Tromsø Arctic Cathedral and Fjellheisen at dusk
Across the strait to the Arctic Cathedral (NOK 90), then the cable car to 421 m for the lights of Tromsø: adult return NOK 645, running daily 09:00 to midnight.

The Arctic Cathedral and Fjellheisen sit on the same mainland slope across the strait from Tromsø, and doing them in one late afternoon gives the town from both sides of the water. The cathedral, the white triangle of Tromsdalen church, charges NOK 90 for entry and lets children under 12 in free (ishavskatedralen.no, read 1 November 2026). Fjellheisen, the cable car to Storsteinen, costs an adult NOK 645 return and runs daily from 09:00 to midnight (fjellheisen.no, read the same day). It suits a first evening in Tromsø, a cloudy aurora night and anyone without a car. It does not suit a wheelchair user this winter, because the cable car says step-free access is not possible during its rebuild.
What the pages say: Fjellheisen's upper station is at 421 m above sea level, the ride takes about four to five minutes, the café is open 09:00–23:30, and the way there is bus 26 from Torgsenteret in the centre to the Fjellheisen stop, about 45 minutes on foot, or a taxi of about 10 minutes and NOK 150–250. Children 3–15 pay NOK 310 return and a family of two adults and two children NOK 1,360. The cathedral lists hours a few days ahead, because weddings and funerals close it: 13:00–17:00 on Sunday 1 November, and short windows later in the week. Its next Aurora Tunes, a half-hour organ concert, is on 6 November 2026 at 17:30 for NOK 250, NOK 150 for 8–15s, free under 7. The cathedral's access page says the Tromsø Bridge is closed until November 2026, and its visit page still describes a 20-minute walk across it; the access page gives buses 24 and 26 to the stop Tromsdalen Church, cashless.
The arithmetic
Measured on OpenStreetMap footpaths with the OSRM foot profile, converted at 80 m a minute (computed 1 November 2026): from the town square to the cathedral over the bridge is 1,972 m, 25 minutes, and the cathedral to the Fjellheisen lower station 1,255 m, 16 minutes. By car OSRM avoided the bridge and gave 11.7 km and 18 minutes to the lower station, which matches the closure. Forty minutes in the cathedral, an hour at the top, the rides, the walk or bus legs and a 30-minute buffer: 210 minutes. On the Lapland aurora week it fills the arrival evening in Tromsø.
The light, computed with the NOAA solar equations for Tromsø: sunset is 14:44 on 1 November and 13:31 on 15 November; from 28 November 2026 to 14 January 2027 the sun does not rise; it sets at 14:31 on 1 February and 16:43 on 1 March. The midnight sun runs from 18 May to 25 July 2027. For dusk from the top, go up 30 minutes before those sunset times; in the polar night, any clear hour works.
What goes wrong
The bridge, first: confirm whether it has reopened before planning to walk. Ceremonies, second: the cathedral can close at short notice. Cloud, third: the view and any aurora disappear together. Construction, fourth: no parking at the lower station during the works, the Tromsø stop notes.
Alternatives on the same road
For the lights themselves: Tromsø aurora chase and dog sledding. The winter guide on this site, things to do in Tromsø in winter, sets the rest of the town against the dark hours.
