Things to do in Tromsø in winter, timed against the light
Dog sleds, the aurora bus, Fjellheisen, Polaria and the Arctic Cathedral, set against Tromsø's computed light on 15 January 2027: 38 minutes of sun, 5 h 52 of twilight.
A winter day in Tromsø holds one daytime activity and one night activity, and the light decides the order. On 15 January 2027 the sun is up for 38 minutes (11:35 to 12:13), and civil twilight gives 5 h 52 min of usable grey, computed with the NOAA solar equations for 69.65° N. So the sled goes on a late-morning departure, the aurora bus at night, and the town's indoor sights fill the hours between. From 28 November 2026 to 14 January 2027 the sun does not rise at all.
The light, computed
NOAA solar position equations for 69.6496° N, 18.9560° E, sunrise and sunset at −0.833° (upper limb with refraction), Norwegian winter time (UTC+1). Civil twilight is the sun less than 6° below the horizon.
| 15th of | sunrise | sunset | sun | with civil twilight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November 2026 | 09:26 | 13:31 | 4 h 05 min | 7 h 13 min |
| December 2026 | — | — | none | 4 h 29 min |
| January 2027 | 11:35 | 12:13 | 0 h 38 min | 5 h 52 min |
| February 2027 | 08:17 | 15:42 | 7 h 25 min | 9 h 41 min |
| March 2027 | 06:08 | 17:41 | 11 h 33 min | 13 h 32 min |
Reykjavík on the same 15 January has 5 h 24 min of sun on the same equations. Tromsø in January is darker than anywhere on an Iceland ledger, and February is where the two nearly meet: 7 h 25 min in Tromsø against 8 h 38 min in Reykjavík.
The activity clock
Each row is what the operator publishes, read on 1 November 2026, set against the 15 January light.
| Activity | Starts | Lasts | Against 15 January |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-drive dog sledding, Tromsø Villmarkssenter | 07:30, 08:30, 09:30 or 10:30 from the Radisson Blu, Sjøgata | about 4 h 15 min, of which about 45 min on the sled | the 09:30 and 10:30 departures put the sled run inside the twilight; the 07:30 one runs in the dark |
| Fjellheisen cable car | daily 09:00–00:00 | 30–90 min | twilight view at midday, city-lights view after 16:00 |
| Polaria (aquarium, seals) | 10:00–17:00; seal feeding 10:30 and 12:30 | 1–2 h | indoors; the 12:30 feeding is lost to a late sled |
| Arctic Cathedral | hours vary by day (10–17 on most days listed, Sunday 13–17) | 30–60 min | indoors; concerts in the evening |
| Aurora chase by bus, Arctic Guide Service | meet 18:00, depart 18:15, Prostneset bus terminal | 6.5 h (5–8 h) | entirely in the dark, back after midnight |
A full January day is therefore sled from 10:30 to about 14:45, then the cable car in the dark for the city lights, then the aurora bus at 18:15. Two days work better than one: sled and cable car on day one; Polaria, the cathedral and the bus on day two.
Dog sledding
Visit Tromsø lists two operators with clear terms. Tromsø Villmarkssenter's self-drive tour is from NOK 3,390 per person ("Prices can vary by season"), minimum age 16, recommended maximum 70, not in pregnancy, about 170 kg combined per sled, with 25–35 minutes each way by bus from the Radisson Blu. Tromsø Aurora Husky's tour starts at a camp on Kvaløya "around 30 minutes from Tromsø", from NOK 3,950; its season "is based around three winter months", with no dates printed. Both read on visittromso.no on 1 November 2026. The operator's own site (villmarkssenter.no) returned a 404 today. This site's page for the experience is Tromsø dog sledding.
The aurora chase
Visit Tromsø gives the aurora window as "late August to early April", with clear skies and darkness as the two conditions. The lowest shared fare on its listings today was Arctic Guide Service's Essential Northern Lights Chase: from NOK 750 for ages 13 and over, NOK 500 for ages 4–12, an 18:15 departure, about 6.5 hours, a minimum of seven paying passengers, and the plain line "Northern Lights sightings cannot be guaranteed." If the minimum is not met, you are offered an alternative or a full refund. Minibus and private chases on the same site cost more; the private ones are priced per group. Tromsø aurora chase has the arithmetic of a night out.
The chase is a drive inland or along the fjords to wherever the cloud breaks, which is why it lasts six hours. With a hire car, the Lapland aurora week does the same thing itself: its day 6 is a Tromsø aurora night by car on Kvaløya or back up the E8.
In town
Fjellheisen, the cable car to Storsteinen, runs every day 09:00–00:00; adult return NOK 645, child 3–15 NOK 310 (fjellheisen.no, read 1 November 2026). The lower station is being rebuilt: no parking there (free temporary parking about five minutes' walk away at Solstrandvegen 30), and no wheelchair access during the works. Bus 26 is easier than driving over the bridge.
Polaria opens 10:00–17:00 and feeds and trains its seals at 10:30 and 12:30 every day (polaria.no, read 1 November 2026). Its ticket page showed no adult price today, only an annual pass from NOK 700, so the entry fee is a check item.
The Arctic Cathedral's own page lists hours that change day by day, from 10–17 on most days to 15:15–17 on Thursday 5 November, and an "Aurora Tunes" concert on 6 November 2026 at 17:30. No entry price was printed; check the calendar on ishavskatedralen.no.
Against an Iceland week
The honest comparison is February. Tromsø in mid-February has seven and a half hours of sun, a city airport and sledding that Iceland does not sell in the same form; Reykjavík has an hour more light and a road network built for a week of driving. In December and early January the comparison breaks: Tromsø has 48 days without a sunrise, and Reykjavík keeps four hours of sun at midwinter. For a lights trip by car, the five-day south coast and Golden Circle covers more ground per day; Tromsø suits a city base where the activity comes to collect you. This site's dark hours and cloud comparison scores the two Lapland bases for the aurora itself.
