Tromsø

Tromsø is the Arctic base. It is the biggest town between Bodø and the Russian border, the airport with the most direct flights north of the Arctic Circle, a Hurtigruten call in both directions, and the place where Senja, Lyngen, the Finnish border at Kilpisjärvi and the Lofoten road all start. On a winter journey it is where you sleep, hire the car and buy the food; on a summer one it is the pivot between the island coast and the inland E8 to Finland.

The city sight that matters for a timetable is Fjellheisen, the cable car to Storsteinen. The operator's page today lists daily running from 09.00 to midnight and an adult return at NOK 645, and warns that construction means no parking at the lower station, with free parking about five minutes' walk away and no step-free access during the rebuild. Take bus 26 from the centre instead of driving over the bridge.

Practical line: the toll ring is automatic and a foreign plate is invoiced; fuel and supermarkets are on both sides of the bridge; Sunday closing applies. The E8 south to Finland is open all year and the usual winter rule is to carry a shovel and expect the Skibotn–Kilpisjärvi mountain stretch to be plough-escorted after snow. The Senja ferry from Brensholmen is the island shortcut; the coastal road to Sommarøy and Brensholmen is slow.

Quiet in Tromsø is weekday daytime in the polar night, when the tour buses are out chasing aurora and the centre is empty. In summer the midnight-sun crowds come late and the morning is yours. What was not read from an official page today: the airport-to-centre distance and the ferry season for Brensholmen–Botnhamn (see the Senja stop).
