Stokksnes is the low peninsula east of Höfn where black-sand dunes run out under Vestrahorn, the jagged mountain at the end of the road. The land is private and the owners, who run Viking Café at the end of the road, charge admission for access and parking: 1,200 ISK per person on 1 November 2026, under-16s free. It suits photographers, anyone sleeping in Höfn with a free morning or evening, and walkers who want an hour on flat sand. It is not a canyon or waterfall stop; the point is the mountain, the dunes and the light.

The figures, read today on vestrahorn.is, the landowners' own site: the admission panel on every page shows 1,200 ISK per person and free for children under 16. Older wording on the same site disagrees, with 1,100 ISK in the FAQ and on the About and Viking village pages, and 1,000 ISK on the map page and the Icelandic page; pay what the till charges. Tickets are sold at Viking Café, open 07:30–22:00, and at a self-service kiosk outside from 22:00 to 07:30, and each ticket is valid once, though staff will talk about re-entry. Three marked paths start nearby: yellow, 5.5 km and easy, along the beach and past the Viking village; red, 5.1 km and easy, around Kirkjusandur and along Drápsbjörg, slippery when wet; blue, 7.4 km and moderate, for walkers with good shoes. The site says the drive from Höfn is 18 minutes and the last 4 km are gravel. Camping on the site costs 2,800 ISK per person and includes beach access.

The arithmetic

From a Höfn bed, on the seven-day or ten-day Ring Road, the café is 16 km and 20 minutes each way by OSRM on OpenStreetMap. The yellow path is 5.5 km, about 70 minutes at 80 m/min; with time for photographs, 90 minutes. Add 10 minutes for tickets and a 20-minute buffer: about 160 minutes. Stokksnes is already a stop on day 3 of the ten-day journey, Höfn to Egilsstaðir; there, going out and back to Route 1 adds about 25 minutes of driving by OSRM, so the walk costs about 125 minutes that day.

What goes wrong

Snow: the landowners say a 4x4 may be needed on the gravel in heavy snow; safetravel.is advises winter tyres, a look at umferdin.is and vedur.is, and waiting somewhere safe when weather turns. Tide and wet rock: the red path is flagged as slippery when wet. The fee: the site's conflicting figures mean the price at the till may differ from the one above.

Alternatives on the same road

West of Höfn, the Fjallsárlón boat and the Jökulsárlón boats are the paid ice outings, and the Diamond Beach at dawn is free. In winter, the Vatnajökull ice cave is the guided alternative on the same coast.

Questions people ask

How much is the fee, and where do I pay?
1,200 ISK per person and free for under-16s in the admission panel across vestrahorn.is on 1 November 2026, though older text on the site says 1,100 and 1,000 ISK. Pay at Viking Café, open 07:30–22:00, or at the self-service kiosk outside it overnight. Each ticket is valid once.
Do I need a 4x4?
No, by the landowner's site: the last 4 km are gravel but manageable in any car, unless there is heavy snow, when a 4x4 may be needed.
Which path is the dunes walk?
The yellow path, 5.5 km and rated easy, along the black-sand beach and past the Viking village film set. The red path is 5.1 km around Kirkjusandur and Drápsbjörg, slippery when wet; the blue path is 7.4 km and moderate.
What is the Viking village?
A film set built in 2009, mostly of driftwood and old telephone poles, by the landowner's account. It is open all year and included in the ticket.
