The Reykjavík Food Walk is a three-hour guided meal in instalments: meet at the main entrance of Harpa, walk about 2 km through the centre, sit down in five small restaurants and eat eight or more tastings, from lamb and fresh fish to a hot dog and a homemade dessert. It suits a first day in the city, solo travellers who want company at dinner, and families with children who eat adventurously. It does not suit vegans, wheelchair users, or anyone counting krónur: at 18,900 ISK it costs more than most restaurant dinners in town.

The operator today is The Reykjavik Food Walk, running since 2015 by its own account, at Klapparstígur 25, the same address and phone number as Wake Up Reykjavík, which lists the walk among its tours. The figures, read on both sites on 1 November 2026: 18,900 ISK a person with all food included; on the walk's own booking widget the adult (13+) price shows as 153 USD and children aged 4 to 12 as 79 USD. The tour runs every day with several departures, lasts about three hours "give or take 15 minutes", covers roughly 2 km of slow walking and keeps open groups to a maximum of 12 to 14. Routes differ by start time because each restaurant keeps its own hours. Private versions run at 11:30, 12:30, 13:30, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00 and cost the same per head plus a flat 87,500 ISK per booking; the operator's own example is 163,100 ISK for four.

Cancellation, as the operator states it: more than 24 hours' notice gets a reschedule, an open-ended hold or a full refund; inside 24 hours the booking is non-refundable and cannot be moved. Private bookings need 72 hours. The site also promises a refund if you do not enjoy the tour.

The arithmetic

From Lækjartorg to Harpa is about 500 m by OpenStreetMap foot routing, six minutes each way at 80 m a minute. Add a 10-minute margin before departure, the three-hour walk and the operator's own 15-minute overrun: 6 + 10 + 195 + 6 is about 215 minutes, most of an afternoon or evening. On the five-day South Coast and Golden Circle journey it fills the evening of day 1 after the airport drive, and it replaces dinner, so the real cost of the day is smaller than the minutes suggest.

The private surcharge per head is simple division of the 87,500 ISK fee: 43,750 ISK for two, 21,875 for four, 10,938 for eight and 4,375 for twenty, on top of 18,900 each.

What goes wrong

Weather: the tour walks between stops in whatever the day brings, so dress for a wet Reykjavík street. Sell-outs: the operator says dates fill and offers a waitlist. Diet: tell it when booking, not at the first table. Mobility: no wheelchair access.

Alternatives on the same road

The Hallgrímskirkja tower is 16 minutes uphill from Harpa for the view after lunch. A pool morning is the cheapest local habit in the city. For a set lunch on the Golden Circle instead, the Friðheimar tomato lunch is a short detour from day 2 of the same journey.

Questions people ask

Who actually runs it?
The Reykjavik Food Walk, whose site gives Klapparstígur 25 and +354 454 0222. Wake Up Reykjavík lists the same walk at the same address and sells it at 18,900 ISK. reykjavikfoodwalk.com now redirects to thereykjavikfoodwalk.com.
What if I am vegetarian or vegan?
The operator says vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free and lactose-free alternatives are easy, as is avoiding nuts, seeds, fruit and shellfish, if you say so when booking. Vegans are welcome, but the operator warns that traditional Icelandic food is hard to adapt.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
No. The operator states the walk is not wheelchair accessible because of the old buildings of the restaurants it visits.
How big are the groups?
Open tours are capped at 12 to 14 guests, by the operator's FAQ. Private tours take groups of 1–20 online and larger groups by email.
