Landmannalaugar is the highland stop most 4x4 itineraries build a day around, and the one with the most rules. It is reached only on F-roads: the Vegagerðin opening table, read today, shows the northern F208 from Sigalda opening between 23 May and 23 June over 2021–2025, average 2 June, and the F225 Dómadalur road between 9 and 24 June. Until the Road Administration opens them they are closed to everyone, and "The state of snow cover is the most important factor on deciding when mountain roads can be opened to traffic."

The rules, from safetravel.is today: "Notice that not all 4WD vehicles are good for the F-roads!"; "Know that no insurance covers any damage of a vehicle while crossing a river!"; "If you're unsure of crossing a river then don't do it, turn around". The last ford before the hut car park is the test; most small 4x4s stop at the lower car park and walk the footbridge.

The practical line, from parka.is and fi.is today: the service fee is 1,500 ISK for a car up to five seats, 2,450 for six to nine, 750 for a motorcycle, charged at all hours, and from 20 June to 13 September 2026 any vehicle arriving between 09:00 and 16:00 must have booked in advance. The Ferðafélag Íslands hut sleeps 78 and is listed at 17,000 kr.; the warden is on site in summer; the toilet and shower house serves the campsite, and the facility fee is folded into the Parka fee here. No fuel: the last is Olís at Hrauneyjar on the north approach. Phone signal is weak.

How long: three hours for the Brennisteinsalda loop and the hot stream; a night for the start of the Laugavegur. Quietest early and late.
