Gamla stan, Stockholm's old town on its island between the lake and the sea, is best done as a loop on foot from the metro, and it costs nothing unless you go through a door. The loop below is 2.4 km and 30 minutes of walking, computed on OpenStreetMap footpaths on 1 November 2026; with one museum it fills two and a half hours. It suits a first morning in the city and any weather. It does not suit anyone hoping for quiet at midday in summer, when the lanes fill.

Stortorget is the square of gabled merchants' houses; the Nobel Prize Museum stands on it at number 2. The palace, which its own site says has more than 600 rooms over eleven floors, faces the Outer Courtyard. Mårten Trotzigs gränd is the stepped lane between Västerlånggatan and Prästgatan. Riddarholmen Church, the royal burial church, is five minutes' walk from the palace, the palace's page says.

The doors, with today's prices

The Royal Palace ticket covers the Royal Apartments with the Hall of State, the Treasury and the Museum Three Crowns: adult SEK 220, SEK 240 from May to September; students 200 and 220; children 7–17 110 and 120; 6 and under free with an adult (kungligaslotten.se, read 1 November 2026). The palace calendar shows 10:00–16:00 every day of November 2026, with the warning that the apartments can close for the King's official receptions. Riddarholmen Church is SEK 65. The Nobel Prize Museum is SEK 160 for an adult and SEK 120 for students and seniors, free to 18, with a guided tour included and tickets sold only at the entrance; from October to March it is shut on Mondays and open 11:00–17:00, Fridays to 21:00, with Christmas closures listed on its page.

The arithmetic

Thirty minutes of walking, 90 minutes inside one door, and the walk from Stockholm C to Stortorget and back (1,137 m, 14 minutes each way by the same routing) make 148 minutes; the day loses 150.

What goes wrong

Receptions, first: the palace apartments can close at short notice for state business, and the palace lists the dates on its page. Mondays in winter, second, for the Nobel Prize Museum. Crowds, third: the main lane is a single file of shops in summer; the parallel Prästgatan is the quiet way.

Alternatives nearby

The Vasa Museum (/experiences/vasa-museum) is the indoor half of a winter day, and the Vaxholm boats (/experiences/stockholm-archipelago-boat) leave from Strandvägen about 18 minutes' walk away. The Stockholm stop has the airport train.
