A boat out to Vaxholm and back is the simplest way to see the Stockholm archipelago without staying in it. Strömma's S/S Stockholm, a classic archipelago steamer, takes about 1 h 30 from Strandvägen to Vaxholm for SEK 395 return or SEK 245 one way; the fast M/S Cinderella II does it in 50 minutes from SEK 190 one way (stromma.com, read 1 November 2026). It suits a summer day with five or six hours free; it does not suit a tight winter day, when the operator's page showed the fast boat not available.

What the operator's page says: departures from Strandvägen, berth area 16 for S/S Stockholm and 14 for Cinderella II, which also calls at Nacka Strand and Gåshaga. The 12:00 and 15:00 steamer departures are live-guided in English and Swedish. Both boats have a café, restaurant, bar and toilets, and dogs are welcome outside or in a designated area. All tickets must be booked in advance: capacity is sold online, and a departure showing sold out has no tickets on board. Arrive 15 minutes early for the pre-booked queue. Return on any later departure of either boat, or by SL bus from Söderhamnsplan, about 45 minutes. If the point is the water and not the town, the same operator's guided loops of 2.5 or 3 hours leave the same quay from SEK 395, with lunch from SEK 555 on the shorter one.

The arithmetic

Steamer out 90 minutes, two hours in Vaxholm, steamer back 90: 300 minutes. The walk from Stockholm C to the Strandvägen berths is 1,509 m by the OSRM foot profile, 19 minutes at 80 m a minute each way (computed 1 November 2026). Add the 15-minute early arrival and a 15-minute buffer and the day loses 370 minutes. The guided loop without a stop costs about 220.

Price per minute on the water, from the dated fares: SEK 2.2 on the steamer return (395 ÷ 180) and on the 3-hour loop, 2.6 on the 2.5-hour loop, 2.7 on the steamer one way and 3.8 on the fast boat. The slow boat both ways is the cheapest hour afloat; the fast boat is for buying time in Vaxholm.

What goes wrong

Selling out, first, because there are no tickets on board. The season, second: the page prints no season dates, and on 1 November one boat was not bookable. Accessibility, third: the steamer has stairs and a gangway that slopes at low water. The free transfer to the fortress is summer only.

Alternatives on the same quay

The public Waxholmsbolaget boats serve the same waters as a commuter line from Strömkajen, and between there and Vaxholm an ordinary SL ticket is the fare, bought in the SL app or by card on board; that is the cheap way to Vaxholm, without a guide or a café. On land, the Vasa Museum (/experiences/vasa-museum) is across the bridge on Djurgården, and the old town (/experiences/gamla-stan-walk) is 1,414 m and about 18 minutes' walk south-west by the same routing.

Questions people ask

Steamer or fast boat?
S/S Stockholm takes about 1 h 30 to Vaxholm from berth 16 on Strandvägen, live-guided at 12:00 and 15:00, from SEK 245 one way. M/S Cinderella II takes 50 minutes from berth 14, from SEK 190 one way, and its ticket includes the summer boat transfer to Vaxholm Kastell and Badholmen.
Can I go one way and come back by bus?
Yes. Strömma says an SL bus runs from Söderhamnsplan in Vaxholm to Tekniska Högskolan in Stockholm in about 45 minutes. The bus fare is SL's; check it on sl.se.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
The Cinderella boats are, with an accessible toilet on the main deck, the operator says. S/S Stockholm is not: there are stairs and thresholds, the gangway can slope at low water, and electric wheelchairs cannot board.
What about the public archipelago ferries?
Waxholmsbolaget runs the archipelago's public boats. Its ticket pages, read 1 November 2026, say every SL ticket is valid between 44 piers from Strömkajen out to Vaxholm, Rindö and Tynningö, that you buy in the SL app or on board with a card and keep the paper ticket, that under-7s travel free with a paying adult and that 7 to 19, students and over-65s pay a reduced fare. So the public boat to Vaxholm costs an ordinary SL ticket; the fare amounts and timetables sit in the SL app and the Waxholmsbolaget app, not on the web pages.
