Dog sledding near Reykjavík means a husky team, a musher and a 35-minute ride on the hills within 15 minutes of Mosfellsbær, about 35 minutes' drive from the city. Dog Sledding Iceland runs it all year on weekday mornings; the catch is the ground. When there is snow or ice the dogs pull a sled; when there is not, they pull a wheeled kart on a mountain road instead. It suits dog lovers, families with children from six (four in summer), and anyone with a Reykjavík morning free. It does not suit anyone who will only be happy on snow and cannot be flexible: for that, book the sled-only option and accept that it may be cancelled.

The figures, read today on dogsledding.is. The experience lasts 60 to 90 minutes, including a 35-minute ride with a break halfway over 5 to 10 km depending on conditions. Tours run Monday to Friday, mostly in the morning, in daylight between about 09:30 and 12:30 depending on the season; weekends are the dogs' days off. The FAQ prices the regular tour at 32,900 ISK per person for the year-round option and 35,900 ISK for sled only, with up to four to six riders per team and two or three teams out at once; a private team for up to three costs 131,600 ISK (read 2026-11-01). The home page shows "from 34,900 ISK" for the same tour, so the price in the booking calendar is the one that counts. Sled-only departures run from 1 December to 15 April and are cancelled and refunded, minus 3,000 ISK per person, if there is no snow. Pick-up from central Reykjavík can be added. The exact location moves with conditions and is sent the evening before in winter, up to two days before in summer.

The arithmetic

None of the ledgers on this site has a free morning near Mosfellsbær built in, but every Iceland journey that starts or ends in Reykjavík has one at the edges. From a Reykjavík bed, using the operator's 35-minute drive each way, it is 70 minutes on the road, up to 90 on site, 30 minutes for the meeting time (the terms give 15 to 30 minutes before the tour) and a 30-minute buffer for a winter road: about 220 minutes. Central Mosfellsbær itself is 16 km and about 20 minutes from the city centre by OSRM on OpenStreetMap; the operator's figure is longer because the site is outside town. On the five-day South Coast and Golden Circle journey, day 1 sleeps in Reykjavík after the airport, so the ride fits the morning of day 2 only by delaying the Golden Circle.

What goes wrong

No snow: likely outside midwinter, and the year-round option will run on wheels. Weather: the operator may delay, shorten or cancel for safety, with a full refund apart from the sled guarantee. Your own cancellation: more than 48 hours before departure returns 90 %; 48 hours or less returns nothing. Missing the meeting time or pick-up counts as a no-show with no refund. Roads: the operator recommends a 4x4 from December to March but does not require one, and suggests sleeping in Reykjavík the night before.

Alternatives

Husky Iceland, a family-run kennel at Fitjakot, lists winter sledding and husky cart rides in snow-free seasons on its own site. For guaranteed snow, the snowmobile on Langjökull runs on the ice cap. Further afield, Tromsø and Rovaniemi sled on winter snow.

Questions people ask

Will there be snow?
Not guaranteed. The year-round option runs on a sled if there is snow or ice and on a wheeled kart if not, rather than being cancelled. The sled-only option (1 December to 15 April) is cancelled and refunded, minus 3,000 ISK per person, if sledding is impossible (read 2026-11-01).
Who can ride?
From age 6, or 4 from May to September; under-18s with a parent or guardian on the ride. Not during pregnancy. Riders must be physically fit, at most 95 kg and with a BMI below 30, by the operator's terms.
Do I drive the sled?
When the tour runs on a sled, the operator offers each participant a turn riding at the back with the musher guide.
What should I wear?
Long under-layers, a warm sweater, a waterproof jacket and trousers, waterproof boots above the ankle, gloves, hat and sunglasses or goggles. Insulated or rain suits can be lent. The operator advises against fur and white clothing.
