Iceland in winter: what is open, what closes, how much light

November 2026 to March 2027 in dated switches: boats, caves, ferries, tyres and holidays, read on operators' and agencies' pages on 1 Nov 2026, daylight computed.

Winter in Iceland means short days, long nights and a smaller list of things that run. It is also when the aurora is up, the ice caves are open and the beds are at their cheapest. From November to March, Reykjavík gets between 4 h 07 min and 11 h 40 min of daylight. Mean temperatures in the capital stay between 0.6 and 2.2 °C. The boats to Jökulsárlón and the puffin colonies stop, the highland roads close, and the ferry from Denmark pauses in January and February. Whale boats, ice caves, lagoons, pools and the Reykjavík indoor shows run through it. The calendar below gives every switch with the date its operator prints, read on 1 November 2026.

The light and the cold

Daylight is for Reykjavík (64.15° N), NOAA solar equations, computed on 1 November 2026. Temperature is the 1991–2020 monthly mean computed from Veðurstofa Íslands' published values for station 1, Reykjavík, and station 422, Akureyri.

Two things stand out. The light comes back fast: from 4 h 07 at the solstice to 8 h 37 by 15 February, more than double. And the capital is mild, a degree or two above freezing on average. The north is colder, by 1.2 to 1.5 degrees from December to February. Wind matters more than the thermometer: Reykjavík's station averages 5 to 5.5 metres a second from December to February.

What a winter trip looks like

Stay south, or fly north. This site's daylight scorecard sets a rule per ledger. The 7-day Ring Road fits by light only from 15 February to 1 November, because its longest day is 325 km. The South Coast and Golden Circle ledger runs all year with its shorter days. The North ledger flies to Akureyri and drives at most 150 km a day, so it fits from 1 February.

Build the day around the light. In December, plan one outdoor stop before 12:00 and one after. The ice caves guide shows which Katla departures run in daylight. The first-day grid shows what is open when you land.

Use the dark. The long nights are the aurora season. The moonless weeks this winter centre on 9 November, 9 December, 7 January, 6 February and 8 March (the northern lights guide has the dark hours). The lagoons are open late: the Forest Lagoon to midnight, Earth Lagoon and Vök to 22:00. The pools are open to 22:00 too.

Keep an indoor day spare. Storms close the passes for hours or days. In Reykjavík, Volcano Express in Harpa is the easiest to drop into, walk-in with a show every 15 minutes and done in 15–45 minutes; the Lava Show, FlyOver, Perlan and the National Museum also run indoors; the rainy-day routes chain them with 20 minutes outdoors.

Questions

Is it worth visiting Iceland in winter?

Yes, for the northern lights, the ice caves, the empty roads on the south coast and the lower prices. No, if the point is the highlands, the puffins or a full Ring Road in a week: all three are summer things. Plan around 4 to 8 hours of daylight and a spare day for weather.

Can I drive the Ring Road in winter?

The road is kept open where it can be, but passes close in storms, and the 7-day ledger does not fit the light from November to mid-February. Drive the south coast, fly to Akureyri for the north, and check umferdin.is and safetravel.is each morning.

What should I pack for Iceland in winter?

Waterproof outer layers, warm mid-layers, a hat and gloves, and boots with grip; the paths at waterfalls and Kerið ice over. A swimsuit, because the pools and lagoons are the best place to be when it is dark at 16:00.
