Your first day in Reykjavík after the flight: what is still open

Land at Keflavík, reach Harpa about 2 h 20 min later, and see what is open: a landing-hour grid with pools, Volcano Express, Perlan and museums, and computed sunsets.

A transatlantic flight lands you at Keflavík in the early morning, and the room in Reykjavík is rarely ready before mid-afternoon. That leaves six or seven hours awake in a city you have not seen. The three best uses of them are a geothermal pool, which opens at 06:30 on weekdays, Volcano Express in Harpa, which runs from 10:00, and a slow walk along the harbour. Each is short, mostly indoors, and needs no booking days ahead. The grid below turns your landing time into the hour you reach Harpa. It then shows what is still open, using hours read on each venue's page on 1 November 2026 and sunsets computed for Reykjavík.

The inputs

Airport to wheel or bus: 90 minutes. This is the allowance this site's arrival post uses for passport control, bags and the car or bus. It is a round figure, not a measurement.

Keflavík to Harpa: 52.0 km, 51 minutes by OSRM on OpenStreetMap, computed 1 November 2026. The South Coast and Golden Circle ledger carries the same leg as 50 km and 40 minutes at 80 km/h. The OSRM figure includes the slower roads into the centre, so it is the one used here.

Sunset in Reykjavík, NOAA solar equations, computed: 23:59 on 15 June 2027, 19:56 on 15 September and 15:29 on 15 December.

The grid

Hours are weekday hours; pools open later at weekends.

Hours come from reykjavik.is (pools), volcanoexpress.is, thjodminjasafn.is, flyovericeland.com and perlan.is, all read 1 November 2026. Volcano Express starts a show every 15 minutes right up to 20:00, so it is the column that forgives a late landing. FlyOver and Perlan do not print a last entry, so "minutes left" is minutes to closing, not to the last ride.

Reading the grid

The 06:00 and 09:00 rows are the common ones, and they are the easy ones. Land at 06:00 and you are at Harpa at about 08:21. That is too early for anything but a pool, which is the right first stop after a night flight. Sundhöllin is 20 minutes' walk from Harpa, and an adult pays 1,500 ISK (reykjavik.is, price list in force from 5 May 2026). By 10:00 Volcano Express is open, and by 11:00 the city is awake.

The 15:00 row is a short evening: Volcano Express in Harpa still has more than two and a half hours of shows, the museum is shut, FlyOver has about an hour, and in December it is already dark. In June there are more than six hours of light left, which is the moment for the harbour walk.

The 18:00 and 21:00 rows have one answer: a pool if you land at 18:00 and bed if you land at 21:00. Anything else is a fight with the clock.

Three for the first day

1. A geothermal pool. This is the best thing for a body that has spent the night in a seat. Pools open at 06:30 on weekdays and 08:00 or 09:00 at weekends. Adults pay 1,500 ISK, ages 10–17 pay 400, and under-10s go free. Swimsuit hire is 1,270 ISK and a towel 860, if your bag is still at the hotel.

2. Volcano Express, Harpa level K2. It is ten minutes in a motion seat over Reykjanes, Esja, Hengill, Bláfjöll and Keilir, with heat, cold, turbulence and freefall effects and real eruption footage from 2021–2024. Before it there is a pre-show with a live eruption feed and a 48-hour earthquake monitor. Allow 15–45 minutes in all. It runs daily 10:00–20:00 with a show every 15 minutes. Adults pay 3,990 ISK and children aged 4–12 pay 2,990, with no booking fee, on tix.is or at the Harpa desk (volcanoexpress.is, read 1 November 2026). It is wheelchair accessible, with step-free access and lifts in Harpa. If you are short of sleep, the pre-show is the gentler half.

3. The harbour on foot. From Harpa to Sun Voyager is 710 metres, about 9 minutes. From Harpa to the Old Harbour's whale-boat quay at Ægisgarður is 814 metres, about 10 minutes (OSRM foot routes, computed 1 November 2026). It costs nothing, and it shows you the city in the order the map does. Walk it in daylight: in December, light lasts from 11:16 to 15:29.

If the first day is a driving day

The 7-day and 10-day ledgers drive from Keflavík to Vík on Day 1, 225 km and 170 minutes, and do not pass through Reykjavík. On those, the first day after the flight is the south coast. The arrival post shows that it works from a 06:00 landing in any month and fails from a 12:00 landing in December. The South Coast and Golden Circle ledger was written the other way round, with Day 1 a 40-minute drive and a night in Reykjavík. That ledger is the one this grid serves.

Questions

Can I check in early at Reykjavík hotels?

That is each hotel's own policy, and this site has not surveyed it. Ask when you book, and plan the morning as if the room will not be ready: that is what the grid above assumes.

Is it safe to drive after a night flight?

Safetravel.is lists fatigue among its driving warnings. On the city-first ledger the drive is 52 km on a main road; on the Vík ledgers it is 225 km. If you slept badly on the plane, take the bus to Reykjavík and collect the car the next morning.

What should I do on the first evening?

Swim, eat, and sleep early. In winter, a northern lights boat from the Old Harbour at 21:00 is a gentle first night; Special Tours sells it from 12,490 ISK (specialtours.is, read 1 November 2026). Check the aurora forecast on vedur.is first.
