Northern lights in Iceland: the moonless weeks of winter 2026–27
When to go, where to stand and what a tour costs, with every new and full moon from November 2026 to April 2027 and the hours of true darkness in Reykjavík, computed.
Go between late September and early April, and aim for the week either side of a new moon. Get out of the city's lights, and check two forecasts on the day: the cloud and the solar activity. This winter's dark-moon weeks centre on 9 November, 9 December, 7 January, 6 February and 8 March. On each of those nights Reykjavík has between 7.5 and 13 hours of full astronomical darkness, computed below. December has the longest nights and a full moon on Christmas Eve. November and January balance darkness against roads that are still mostly open. No date guarantees anything: the lights need clear sky and an active sun, and neither can be booked.
The calendar
New and full moons are computed with the lunar-phase algorithm in Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms, chapter 49, in UTC, which is Iceland's clock all year. Darkness is for Reykjavík (64.15° N, 21.94° W) on the new-moon night from the NOAA solar equations. "Astronomical dark" is the sun more than 18° below the horizon, when the sky is fully dark. "Civil dark" is the sun more than 6° below, the point at which this site's best-month formula starts counting.

Read it as weeks, not nights. For about four days either side of a new moon the moon is a thin crescent, or below the horizon for most of the dark hours. Around a full moon it lights the sky enough to wash out a faint display, though a strong one still shows. By early April the full darkness has shrunk to two and a half hours, which is why the season ends then.
The month
This site's best-month formula multiplies the dark hours in each month by the clear-sky fraction from Veðurstofa's 1991–2020 cloud record. For Reykjavík it ranks December (147), November (134) and January (129) highest, with October (112) and February (100) next. Akureyri scores lower in every month because its station records more cloud. That is a planning score, not a forecast. On a trip that is also a driving trip, the South Coast and Golden Circle ledger is written to run all year. The North ledger runs to October, the last month its roads are reliable.
Where to stand
Anywhere dark with a view north. In Reykjavík the city lights are the problem, not the latitude. Grótta lighthouse at the tip of Seltjarnarnes is the nearest dark shore, reachable on foot or by bus. Outside town, every ledger night on the south coast — Hvolsvöllur, Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur — is a village with a dark field five minutes away. Do not stop on the Ring Road shoulder to watch. Safetravel's Northern Lights Safety page is about exactly that.
Going out with someone
If the whole sky is shut, an indoor hour beats a cold wait: Volcano Express in Harpa, ten minutes on foot from the boat piers, runs real eruption footage every 15 minutes until 20:00 for 3,990 ISK an adult.
| Way out | Price, read 1 Nov 2026 | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Special Tours boat, Old Harbour | from 12,490 ISK; 7–15 6,245; 0–6 free | not stated | 21:00, September to February |
| Elding Northern Lights Cruise, Old Harbour | 14,500 ISK; 7–15 7,250; 0–6 free | 1.5–2.5 h | hotel pickup 3,750 extra |
| Mountaineers super jeep from Reykjavík | from 29,900 ISK | 3–4 h | in a 4x4, away from the city |
| Coach tour (Reykjavík Excursions) | not readable | — | the fare rendered as "0 ISK" by script |
| Perlan's Áróra planetarium film | Wonders of Iceland ticket 7,090 ISK | — | the cloudy-night fallback, indoors; open to 21:00 |
The boats sail from ten minutes' walk of Harpa and go a short way out, where the city's glow is behind you. What happens if nothing appears is in each operator's terms, which differ; read them before you book. The super jeep goes further from town and costs more than twice as much. On a night of full cloud over the whole south-west, no tour helps. That is the night for Volcano Express before 20:00, or Perlan's planetarium until 21:00.
On the day
Two pages decide the evening. Veðurstofa Íslands' aurora forecast gives the expected activity and the cloud cover map for the night. Look for a gap in the cloud over where you can drive, not just a high activity number. Safetravel.is gives the roads. Dress for standing still at minus several degrees for an hour. Reykjavík's mean daily minimum is −1.6 °C in December and −1.9 °C in February (1991–2020, computed from Veðurstofa's monthly values), and wind makes it feel colder.
Questions
What is the best month to see the northern lights in Iceland?
By this site's dark-hours-times-clear-sky score, December, then November and January, in Reykjavík. Pick the dates by the moon: the weeks around 9 November, 9 December and 7 January in the 2026–27 season.
Can I see the northern lights from Reykjavík city centre?
Sometimes, on a strong night. Usually the street lights hide all but the brightest displays. Walking to Grótta, or taking a boat from the Old Harbour, gets you out of the glow without a car.
Is a northern lights tour worth it?
It saves you the driving at night on winter roads and the guesswork about where the cloud is. It costs 12,490 to 29,900 ISK a person (read 1 November 2026). If you have a car, a dark field near a south-coast village and the forecast page do the same.
