Golden Circle guide: the loop, the stops and what each add-on costs

Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss and Kerið in one 241.6 km day, plus five add-ons, each priced in km, minutes and krónur on 1 November 2026.

The Golden Circle is a day loop from Reykjavík through Þingvellir, the Geysir hot-spring field and Gullfoss, usually closed with the Kerið crater on the way back. It is 241.6 km and about three hours of driving in summer, by this site's fact sheet. Fees for a car and two people come to 4,738 ISK, and with fuel the bare day costs 9,882 ISK (all read 1 November 2026). Everything else you might add costs almost nothing in road. Fontana and Friðheimar are on the route and add 0.8 km each. The Secret Lagoon adds 18 km, and only the snowmobile adds half a day. The matrix below is the arithmetic.

The four stops

Þingvellir is the national park on the Almannagjá rift, with paved and gravel paths down into it. Parking is 1,000 ISK a car for the day in car parks P1, P2 and P5 (thingvellir.is). The stop page gives it one to three hours. Silfra, the snorkelling fissure, is inside the park.

Geysir is the hot-spring field where Strokkur erupts every few minutes, in any weather. Parka charges 1,080 ISK a car for up to eight hours, plus an 89 ISK transaction fee.

Gullfoss, 10 km further on, is the waterfall at the end of Route 35, with an upper and a lower car park. Parka charges 1,080 ISK a car for four hours, plus 89; the lower path closes when iced.

Kerið is a volcanic crater with a lake, on Route 35 between Selfoss and the Golden Circle. Its service fee is 700 ISK a person and parking is free (kerid.is). Allow 20–40 minutes.

The add-on matrix

Detours are OSRM on OpenStreetMap, computed 1 November 2026, against the direct leg. Minutes are the extra kilometres at 80 km/h. Prices are each operator's page on 1 November 2026. The day total for two adds the add-on for two people to the 9,882 ISK base day.

The Secret Lagoon row includes 386 ISK of extra fuel: 18.1 km at 7.5 litres per 100 km at 284.20 ISK a litre, the price on bensinverd.is on 1 November 2026. The two-stop row includes 522. Rows under 1 km ignore their 17 ISK of fuel.

What the matrix says

Fontana and Friðheimar are free in road. Fontana is at Laugarvatn, between Þingvellir and Geysir. Its baths are open daily 11:00–21:00 from October to May and 10:00–21:00 in summer. It renovated and reopened on 1 August 2026. The rye-bread tour, where bread is baked in geothermal heat, runs at set times: 11:45 and 14:30 from 1 October to 31 May on the hours page, though the FAQ on the home page also lists 10:15. Check when you book. Friðheimar is a tomato greenhouse at Reykholt with a restaurant among the plants. Its kitchen is open every day 11:30–16:00 (fridheimar.is). On a loop that leaves Reykjavík at 09:00, it is a natural lunch.

The Secret Lagoon costs a quarter of an hour. Going by Flúðir between Gullfoss and Kerið adds 18.1 km. The lagoon is open 10:00–19:00 from October to May and to 20:00 in summer, and costs 4,500 ISK for adults; under-15s pay 260 (secretlagoon.is). It is the cheapest soak of the day.

Silfra and the snowmobile change the day's shape. Silfra costs nothing in road, but the snorkel takes two and a half to three hours of a day the stop page already gives one to three. The snowmobile tour leaves Gullfoss for four hours. Either one turns a six-to-eight-hour loop into a nine-to-eleven-hour day.

In winter

The fact sheet computes winter driving at an assumed 60 km/h: 245 minutes for the loop, against 180 in summer. At the Geysir car park, 15 December 2027 has 4 h 08 min of daylight, from 11:12 to 15:20 (NOAA solar equations). Four hours of driving and two of stops do not fit that. In December the honest Golden Circle is Þingvellir as a drive-through, Geysir and Gullfoss in the light, and Kerið or the Secret Lagoon after dark. The lagoon is lit and open until 19:00, and until 18:00 on 24 and 31 December.

On the journeys

The South Coast and Golden Circle ledger gives the loop all of Day 2: 240 km and 180 minutes, from Reykjavík and back. The ferry journey drives it on Day 9 on the way from Reykjavík to Vík, 295 km and 270 minutes. On that day Friðheimar and the Secret Lagoon are both on the road south.

Questions

How long does the Golden Circle take?

About three hours of driving for 241.6 km in summer, and four in winter. Add one to three hours at Þingvellir, half an hour to an hour each at Geysir and Gullfoss, and 20–40 minutes at Kerið. Door to door, six to eight hours in summer and seven to nine in winter.

Is the Golden Circle worth doing without a tour?

With a car, yes: the roads are paved and the stops are signposted, and two people pay 9,882 ISK for fuel and every fee. A tour adds a guide and takes away the winter driving. On an icy December day that is worth having.

What is the best order to drive the Golden Circle?

Clockwise from Reykjavík: Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, then back by Route 35 past Friðheimar, Flúðir and Kerið. That order puts lunch and the lagoon in the afternoon and the crater last, close to Route 1.
