The Golden Circle fact sheet: leg by leg, in km, minutes and krónur
Reykjavík to Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, Kerið and back: 241.6 km, 180 minutes at legal speed in summer, 245 in winter, 9,882 ISK for two at 1 November 2026 prices.
The loop is 241.6 km and about three hours of driving in summer, four in winter, and the fees along it come to 4,738 ISK for two people in a car. Add 18.1 litres of petrol at the 1 November 2026 price and the day costs 9,882 ISK. That is the whole fact sheet; the rest is where each figure comes from, so you can see which ones will have changed by the time you drive it.
The legs
Kilometres are OSRM on OpenStreetMap, read 1 November 2026, between the coordinates on this site's stop pages for Reykjavík, Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss and Kerið. Vegagerðin's distance tool is interactive and returned no figure to a plain read. Summer minutes are computed at 80 km/h, the site's convention for paved road outside towns in normal conditions, rounded to five; winter minutes are computed at an assumed 60 km/h average on the same kilometres, which is a stated assumption, not a measurement, and on a day of drifting snow it is optimistic.
| Leg | km | summer min | winter min |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reykjavík – Þingvellir (Route 36) | 47.6 | 35 | 50 |
| Þingvellir – Geysir | 60.5 | 45 | 60 |
| Geysir – Gullfoss | 10.1 | 10 | 10 |
| Gullfoss – Kerið | 54.6 | 40 | 55 |
| Kerið – Reykjavík (Route 1) | 68.8 | 50 | 70 |
| Loop | 241.6 | 180 | 245 |
OSRM's own routing time for the loop is 229 minutes, which sits between the two and reflects its speed model rather than the legal limit. The South Coast and Golden Circle ledger carries the day as 240 km and 180 minutes, consistent with the summer column. Time at the four stops is on top: the stop pages give Þingvellir one to three hours, Geysir and Gullfoss half an hour to an hour each, Kerið twenty to forty minutes, so the door-to-door day is six to eight hours in summer and seven to nine in winter.
The fees
Read on each operator's own page on 1 November 2026. Parka adds an 89 ISK transaction fee to each single payment (parka.app price list).
| Site | What | Car up to 5 seats | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Þingvellir | parking, valid for the day in P1, P2, P5 | 1,000 | — |
| Geysir | Parka car park, up to 8 hours, toilets included | 1,080 + 89 | — |
| Gullfoss | Parka car park, per 4 hours, toilets included | 1,080 + 89 | — |
| Kerið | service fee, crater and lake, free parking | — | 700 |
| Two people, one car | 3,338 | 1,400 |
Þingvellir charges 1,200 for a six-to-nine-seat car and 400 for a motorcycle; Geysir and Gullfoss 400 for a motorcycle and 2,500 for an eight-to-21-seat van; Gullfoss adds a 1,960 ISK surcharge for an unpaid stay. Kerið's page prints "700 KR" without saying per person; its admission page is the place to confirm, and the figure is treated as per person here, which is how the site's stop page reads it. Kerið is open "when the sun is shining", in the site's own words, which in practice means daylight.
The day cost for two
| Line | ISK |
|---|---|
| Fuel, 241.6 km at 7.5 l/100 km, 18.1 l at 284.20 (bensinverd.is, 1 November 2026) | 5,144 |
| Þingvellir parking | 1,000 |
| Geysir parking with fee | 1,169 |
| Gullfoss parking with fee | 1,169 |
| Kerið, two adults | 1,400 |
| Total | 9,882 |
Fuel is just over half. A larger car at 10 l/100 km adds 1,700 ISK; skipping Kerið saves 1,400 and about an hour. Nothing here is a meal: Geysir and Gullfoss have cafés priced by their operators and not read today.
Daylight, computed
For the Geysir car park (64.31° N, 20.30° W), NOAA solar equations, 15th of the month in 2027: 21 h 10 min on 15 June, 9 h 51 min on 15 October (08:12–18:02), 6 h 30 min on 15 November (09:51–16:21), 4 h 08 min on 15 December (11:12–15:20), 8 h 35 min on 15 February. The winter loop, 245 minutes of driving plus a minimum of two hours at the stops, is six hours and change; it fits in November with nothing over, and in December it does not fit at all unless Þingvellir is a drive-through. Iceland keeps UTC all year, so these are clock times.
What changes
The fees changed within the last year at all four sites and will again; the Parka pages print the fee and the period, not an effective date, so the only date they carry is the day they were read. The kilometres will not change. The winter minutes are the figure to distrust most, in both directions: on a dry February morning 80 km/h is legal and realistic, and on a closed Route 36 the loop runs via Selfoss or not at all.
