Best time to visit Iceland: a monthly scorecard with the numbers

Twelve months scored on daylight, warmth, rain, sunshine, aurora dark hours, highland roads, puffins, whales and the ferry, computed or read 1 November 2026.

There is no single best month, but there are clear best months for each kind of trip. For everything open at once, with the longest days and the warmest weather, go from late June to mid-July. For a driving trip with fewer people and light enough for long days, go in May or September. For the northern lights, go from November to January, when there are four to five clear dark hours a night on average in Reykjavík. December has the shortest days, 4 h 13 min on the 15th, and the most rain, 95 mm. June has 21 hours of light and almost no darkness at all. The scorecard sets every month side by side.

The scorecard

Daylight: Reykjavík on the 15th, 2027, NOAA solar equations. Temperature, rain and sunshine: 1991–2020 monthly means computed here from Veðurstofa Íslands' values for station 1, Reykjavík. Aurora: clear dark hours per night from this site's best-month formula, dark hours times the clear-sky fraction from the same station's cloud record.

Window sources, read 1 November 2026: highland roads from Vegagerðin's 2021–2025 opening table, via this site's F-road post and the season planner. Puffins from Elding's Reykjavík puffin boat dates, 20 April–20 August. Húsavík whales from North Sailing, 1 March–30 November. The 7-day ledger's light from this site's daylight scorecard rule. The ferry from Smyril Line's 2027 schedule, via the season planner.

Reading the card

The sunshine column is not the daylight column. May has the highest mean sunshine of the year in Reykjavík, 209 hours, more than June's 189, with nearly three hours less daylight a day. That is one reason May keeps appearing in this site's driving advice. It is also the third-driest month, at 53 mm, after June and July.

The wettest months are the dark ones. Rain runs 80–95 mm a month from September to March, and 43–64 from May to August. December is the wettest month and has the least light; it is also the best month for the aurora. That trade sits at the heart of a winter trip.

Warmth barely moves the decision. The monthly mean runs from 0.6 °C in February to 11.6 °C in July. The capital's coldest month is barely below 1 °C and its warmest is cool. Pack the same layers in either.

The best month for…

Everything at once: July. All 14 highland road sections were open by 15 July in each of 2021–2025. Puffins are on the cliffs, Húsavík's boats sail, and Reykjavík has 19 h 45 min of daylight. It is also the busiest month, and the one the 7-day ledger is written for.

A driving trip with fewer people: May or September. Both fit the 7-day ledger's light with hours to spare. May has the most sunshine; September has 13 hours of daylight and the first aurora nights, at 2.3 clear dark hours a night. Neither has the highlands: they open after May and close from mid-September.

The northern lights: November to January. Reykjavík averages 4.2–4.7 clear dark hours a night by the formula. The South Coast and Golden Circle ledger is the self-drive plan that works in those months. The northern lights guide has this winter's moonless weeks.

The highlands: mid-July to August. The Highlands 4x4 ledger starts on 10 July for that reason.

Puffins: mid-May to July. That is inside every published window, including the Westfjords ledger's 2 July at Látrabjarg.

Questions

What is the cheapest month to visit Iceland?

This site's season planner records operators' calendars as lowest in January, outside Christmas and New Year, and low in November. It does not print an index, because hotels and hire cars price by date inside booking engines. Compare your own dates in two months before you book.

What is the worst month to visit Iceland?

For a self-drive Ring Road, December: 4 h 13 min of daylight, the most rain and no ferry. For the northern lights, June and July, with no darkness at all. Every month is good for something, which is why the card has ten columns.

Is September a good time to visit Iceland?

For a driving trip, yes: 13 h 05 min of daylight on the 15th, a mean of 8.5 °C, the Ring Road ledgers fit, and the aurora returns. The highland roads close from mid-month, and the puffins have gone.
