Bergen and the fjords in winter: what still runs, and in what light
Between November and March Bergen keeps a fjord boat every morning, two mountain lifts and the Flåm line. What each operator's page said on 1 November 2026, and the daylight.
Bergen in winter is a city break with one fjord boat a day, not a fjord road trip. From November to March a sightseeing boat still leaves the fish market every morning for the Mostraumen strait, the Fløibanen funicular and the Ulriken cable car still run, the Flåm Railway still runs every day, and the Hardangerfjord boat to Rosendal sails all year. What stops is the mountain-road version of the seven-day fjords ledger: its high roads and summer boats belong to May to September. Daylight is short: 5 h 44 on 21 December, computed below.
The light
Computed with the NOAA solar equations for Bergen's harbour, 1 November 2026:
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 November | 08:03 | 16:42 | 8 h 39 |
| 1 December | 09:17 | 15:38 | 6 h 21 |
| 21 December | 09:45 | 15:29 | 5 h 44 |
| 15 January | 09:30 | 16:06 | 6 h 37 |
| 1 February | 08:55 | 16:49 | 7 h 54 |
| 1 March | 07:38 | 18:04 | 10 h 26 |
A morning boat at 10:00 that is back by 13:30 sits inside the light even in late December. A mountain lift after 15:30 in December is a night view.
The table
Read on each operator's or venue's page on 1 November 2026. Adult prices in NOK.
| What | Winter days and times | Adult price | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mostraumen fjord cruise from the fish market | daily 10:00, November–March; 10:00 and 14:00 from April | 890 (2027 listing: 940) | 3–3.5 h; child 4–15 445 |
| Hardangerfjord boat to Rosendal | "every day all year round" | 581 one way, 872 return | 2 h each way, about 3.5 h ashore |
| Fløibanen funicular | weekdays 07:30–24:00, weekends 08:00–24:00 | 80 one way, 145 return | winter prices 1 Oct–31 Mar |
| Ulriken cable car | Tue–Wed 09–19, Thu–Sat 09–23, Sun 09–19; Monday closed except 2 Nov and 15 Feb | 255 one way, 435 return | closed all of January 2027 for maintenance |
| Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene | daily 10–16 to 23 Dec; January weekends only; February–April daily | price not printed | closed 24–26, 31 Dec, 1 Jan |
| Flåm Railway, Myrdal–Flåm | "every day, all year" | from 399 single | about an hour each way |
Two things in the table are worth a second look. Ulriken is shut for the whole of January 2027, so a January trip has one lift, not two. And the Bergen stop on this site records maintenance closures for Fløibanen on 2–5 November 2026 and 15–18 February 2027, read earlier the same day; the opening-hours page read for this post printed no closures. Check the live page if your dates touch those.
The city days
On foot, the Bryggen passages and the Schøtstuene assembly rooms are the wet-weather morning: 1,443 m from the fish market round to the Fløibanen lower station, measured on Bryggen walk in Bergen. Then the funicular up and the forest path down, priced on Fløibanen up, walk down at the winter single fare of NOK 80. Ulriken, the higher mountain, is the other lift; its restaurant keeps short winter hours (Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday 13:00–17:00, Thursday to Saturday 13:00–23:00, closed Monday).
The fjord days
The Mostraumen boat is the fjord trip that needs no car: Rødne Fjord Cruise sails daily at 10:00 from Zachariasbryggen by the fish market through the Osterfjord to the Mostraumen strait and back in three to three and a half hours, NOK 890 an adult and NOK 445 a child aged 4–15 (rodne.no). The same operator's Rosendal boat goes south into the Hardangerfjord every day all year, two hours each way from Strandkaiterminalen, NOK 581 one way, and connects with buses towards Odda.
By rail, the Flåm line runs every day of the year, "from NOK 399" single and about an hour each way between Myrdal and Flåm (vy.no); Flåm Railway to Myrdal and back has the fare notes and Flåm and "Norway in a nutshell" done yourself the connections. In December the Flåm valley, computed at Flåm, has 5 h 35 of sun; take the late-morning train down.
What does not run, or should not be tried
Trolltunga in winter: the official site says to hike only with a guide outside 1 June–30 September, and the destination company says one has to go with one; see Trolltunga hike. Further south, the Lysefjord boat from Stavanger sails only Thursday to Sunday at 11:00 from October to March (Lysefjord cruise). The high summer roads of the fjords ledger close; Trollstigen's recorded dates are in Norway's fjords: what to do, and car-ferry and toll questions in Norway's fjord ferries with a hire car.
A winter weekend, laid out
Day one: Bryggen at first light, around 09:45 in late December, Fløibanen up at noon, walk down before 15:00, Ulriken after dark for the city lights (not in January). Day two: the 10:00 Mostraumen boat, back by 13:30, with the afternoon in a museum. Day three, if there is one: the train east to Myrdal and down the Flåm line. No car is needed; the Bergen stop explains why a car is a burden in the centre anyway.
