Norway's fjords: what to do, and which day of the week it fits

The Geirangerfjord boat, the Flåm Railway, Trollstigen and Preikestolen: operator prices and seasons read 1 November 2026, and the drive from each ledger night.

Do the fjords from the water, the rail line and one mountain road, and do them between June and September. The Geirangerfjord sightseeing boat (from NOK 610, 75 minutes or 2 hours) and the Flåm Railway (from NOK 399 single, about an hour each way, every day of the year) both start at the door of a night on this site's seven-day fjords ledger. Trollstigen, the mountain road between them, has opened as early as 29 April and as late as 12 June in past years. Preikestolen is the exception: it is 46 minutes from Stavanger and more than six hours from any night on the ledger.

The table

Prices and seasons read on the operator's or authority's page on 1 November 2026. Drives by OSRM on OpenStreetMap, computed the same day, normal conditions, no ferry waits.

Geiranger from the water

Visit Geiranger's page lists the Geiranger Fjord Sightseeing Cruise as "75min, 2t turer" from NOK 610, the Silent Fjord Cruise (two hours) from NOK 695, and a winter and spring fjord cruise from Ålesund, "nov - mai", from NOK 1,539. No adult or child split, no season dates and no departure times were printed today; book on geirangerfjord.no or ask on +47 70 26 30 07. The boat adds a morning to the ledger's day 3 night without moving the car. See Geirangerfjord cruise.

The Flåm Railway

Vy's route page, read 1 November 2026: adult single "from NOK 399"; "The journey time from Myrdal to Flåm is around one hour"; "The trains run every day, all year." The marketing operator's own timetable site, norwaysbest.com, answered HTTP 429 (too many requests) today, so departure times and the Nærøyfjord boat from Flåm to Gudvangen are check items. Flåm Railway to Myrdal and back has the full fare notes, and Flåm and "Norway in a nutshell" done yourself rebuilds the classic loop with a car.

Trollstigen: the dates that decide the trip

Nasjonale turistveger's page for the Geiranger–Trollstigen route (104 km) states "The road has sections closed in winter!" and gives its recorded extremes. Trollstigen has opened as early as 29 April and as late as 12 June, and closed as early as 5 October and as late as 7 December. The stretch from Langvatnet down to Geiranger has opened between 27 April and 17 June and closed between 18 November and 9 January. After opening, it "may close for periods at night and in bad weather". A trip booked for the first half of June can therefore find Trollstigen still shut; the ledger's season window starts in late May for that reason, and vegvesen.no is the check on the morning you drive. If the Hellesylt ferry is the problem instead, see Geiranger without the Hellesylt ferry.

Preikestolen

Preikestolen365, the trailhead's official site, gives the hike as "approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) round trip", "around 500 metres" of climbing "spread over several uphill sections", and "about 4 hours round trip" for most people. Parking is NOK 275 per car, NOK 100 per motorcycle, paid on site by card. The trail is "generally snow-free" from June to September; "Winter hiking is possible but more demanding and highly weather-dependent", needs winter equipment and experience, and a guide is recommended for anyone unfamiliar with it. All read on preikestolen365.com on 1 November 2026. See Preikestolen hike.

The planning point is distance. By OSRM, Preikestolen's car park is 338 km and about 6 h 20 from Bergen and 358 km and about 6 h 25 from Flåm. It does not fit the Bergen–Ålesund ledger; it fits a Stavanger weekend or a southern start that adds two days.

Further north

The fjords of Lofoten and Troms are a different trip with a different season. A RIB into the Trollfjord is the boat equivalent there (Lofoten Trollfjord RIB); the Lofoten in winter post sets out the Bodø ferry and the light.

Against an Iceland week

Same length, different week. The fjords ledger is 1,016 km with 17.5 hours of driving and four short ferries; the Iceland Ring Road in 7 days is about 1,555 km and 19.5 hours at the wheel with no ferry. Norway's version puts the sights on boats and railways you sit in; Iceland's puts them beside the road. Both are summer trips in their full form: Trollstigen closes in autumn and Iceland's highland roads do too. For a city start on the way, the Copenhagen or Oslo stopover has the Oslo half of the decision.
