The Lysefjord boat is the way to see Preikestolen without climbing it, and it is the Stavanger trip that still runs in winter. Rødne Fjord Cruise sails a silent electric catamaran from Strandkaien, by the fish market in Stavanger's harbour, up the Lysefjord to below the cliff and back in three to three and a half hours, for NOK 890 an adult and NOK 445 a child aged 4 to 15 (rodne.no, read 1 November 2026). It suits a rainy day, a family with small children and anyone who cannot do a 500 m climb. It does not suit someone who wants to stand on the rock: the cruise has no stops ashore.
What the operator says: the route passes under the Lysefjord Bridge, by Fantahålå, "the cave where outlaws once hid from the sheriff", below Preikestolen, 604 m above the fjord, and to the Hengjanefossen waterfall, with mountain goats often visited in spring and summer. The boat has lounges, panoramic windows, outdoor decks, a snack bar, toilets and free wi-fi; the audio guide is in Norwegian and English. It "cannot wait for late passengers". Its overview page also lists a Lauvvik–Lysebotn car ferry from NOK 595, 2.5 hours one way, closed for the season today, and a winter cruise-and-guided-hike day at NOK 2,790. One oddity: the overview page showed "No upcoming departures" for the cruise on 1 November, while the product page printed a full winter timetable. Book through the product page and check that your date appears.
The arithmetic
On the water 180 to 210 minutes. The quay is in the centre of town, so from a Stavanger hotel the only additions are the walk, a 15-minute check-in margin and a 30-minute buffer: 255 minutes. The Stavanger stop has the drives in from Bergen and Odda; the fjords journey does not reach Stavanger, so this belongs to a southern add-on.
Counted from the operator's schedule, the winter boat sails Thursday to Sunday at 11:00, and daily from 25 to 31 December: 17 departures in November 2026, 20 in December, 19 in January 2027, 16 in February and 16 in March, then daily from April. Computed with the NOAA solar equations for Stavanger, the sun on 21 December rises at 09:30 and sets at 15:41; the 11:00 boat is back by 14:30, inside the light with 71 minutes to spare. Price per minute on the water is NOK 4.2 to 4.9 for an adult.
What goes wrong
Weekdays in winter, first: from October to March there is no Monday-to-Wednesday boat outside Christmas week. Cloud, second: the cliff can disappear. Late arrival, third: the boat leaves on time. Cancellation terms, fourth: the page promises a "flexible change and cancellation policy" and links to its FAQ; read it before booking.
Alternatives on the same road
On foot: Preikestolen hike, 8 km and about four hours, NOK 275 for the car park. Further north and in summer, the Geirangerfjord boat does the same job on a narrower fjord. From Bergen in winter, the same operator sails to Mostraumen; see Bergen and the fjords in winter.

What this page adds
The winter timetable counted from the operator's own schedule — 17 sailings in November 2026, 20 in December, 19 in January, 16 in February and 16 in March — and the December margin computed with the NOAA equations: on 21 December the sun is up in Stavanger 09:30–15:41, so the 11:00 boat is back by 14:30 with 71 minutes of daylight left.
