Norway's fjord ferries and AutoPASS with a hire car

The fjords ledger's four crossings as published on 1 November 2026: 69, 81, 116 and 116 kr per car, passengers free. Why the 50 % AutoPASS discount is not for a hire car.

The four ferries on the seven-day western fjords ledger cost 382 kr for a car under six metres at the prices published for 2026, passengers free, and there is no sensible way for a one-week hire to get the 50 per cent AutoPASS discount, because that discount needs a tag registered to the vehicle and a 2,200 kr prepayment. Expect to pay full price through the hire firm, plus whatever it adds for handling, and treat the ferries as a 400 kr line in the week.

The four crossings

Only one operator's own price page could be read on 1 November 2026. The other two figures come from fergeruter.info, a timetable aggregator that reproduces the 2026 AutoPASS lists; it is named as such and the operators' pages are the ones to check.

Passengers in the car pay nothing: "Passasjerer i bil og fotgjengere reiser gratis" on the aggregator's pages, and the AutoPASS FAQ speaks of foot-passenger tickets only on connections "that still accept foot passenger payment". Fjord1 lists a motorcycle at 33 kr on Eidsdal–Linge and the same 81 kr for anything up to six metres; a car with a trailer is priced on its total length, which is the trap for a campervan.

One correction for the ledger: it carries Eidsdal–Linge at 12 minutes from Norwegian Wikipedia; Fjord1's own timetable shows 13. The ferry minutes for the week are therefore 15 + 13 + 33 + 33 = 94, one more than the ledger's 93.

AutoPASS for ferry, in its own words

Manual payment on board is gone. The AutoPASS for ferry FAQ, read 1 November 2026, says the plate "is automatically read upon entering the ferry" and that without a tag, a prepayment agreement or a FerryPay agreement the owner "receives a full-price invoice with a NOK 35 fee". A tag on its own gives 10 per cent. A tag with a prepayment agreement gives 50 per cent for private customers and 40 for business, and the 2026 prepayment for "MC and vehicles from 0–8 meters" is NOK 2,200. FerryPay charges a registered card one full-price ticket per crossing with no fee and no discount. SoftPay, paying the crew by card, avoids the invoice fee on the autopassferje.no front page. Foreign plates are invoiced by EPASS24.

The bill three ways

Full price, which is what a hire car without a tag pays: 69 + 81 + 116 + 116 = 382 kr. With a tag and no agreement, 10 per cent off: 344 kr. With the prepaid agreement, 50 per cent off: 191 kr.

The prepaid saving is 191 kr. The prepayment is 2,200 kr, eleven and a half times the week's bill, and the tag is tied to a registration number, which on a hire car is the firm's. So the question to ask at the desk is only this: does the car carry a tag, and what do you add per invoice? A firm whose cars carry a tag with an agreement will bill you something near 191 kr plus its fee; one that lets the invoices come will bill 382 kr plus four lots of 35 kr plus its fee, which is nearer 600 kr. Neither is large against a Norwegian hotel night; both are worth knowing before the first ramp.

With your own car from Denmark, the arithmetic changes: a tag bought for a longer trip, or FerryPay set up on a card before Hirtshals, removes the 35 kr fees and the EPASS24 letter.

The Iceland line

The Iceland Ring Road has no ferry at all, which is the one respect in which it is simpler than the fjords. Its equivalent cost line is two camera tolls, Hornafjörður at ISK 1,500 a pass (Vegagerðin, 31 August 2026) and the Vaðlaheiði tunnel, paid afterwards online in the same way a Norwegian invoice arrives. A week on the fjords buys 94 minutes on the water for 382 kr; a week in Iceland buys none, and the ledgers count the difference as minutes, not money, because that is the part that changes the day.
