Tórshavn is the hinge of any Faroese leg: the Norröna from Hirtshals and Seyðisfjörður berths here, every bus route radiates from here, and it is the only place in the islands where you can fill a trolley, change money and sleep without planning ahead. On a Denmark–Faroes–Iceland journey the ship, not the town, sets your days; the town is what you do while the ship is away.
Smyril Line's published autumn check-in windows for Tórshavn are Tuesday 10.00–12.00 and Friday 17.00–19.00 from 11 September to 20 November, and Friday only from 27 November to 18 December; all passengers must be checked in an hour before sailing. Read the current year's schedule PDF on smyrilline.com before fixing a hotel night either side.
Coming by road, every direction except Streymoy's own villages passes a tolled sub-sea tunnel. Tunnil.fo lists a one-way car price of 175 kr. without a subscription for the Eysturoy and Sandoy tunnels, and 50 kr. leaving Klaksvík or Vágar through the northern and Vágar tunnels (the charge is only levied in that direction). There are no booths: the plate is photographed and you pay online within six days (tunnil.fo, read 1 November 2026; after that an invoice with a DKK 50 fee), or the rental company does and bills you.
Quiet hours are early morning and the hour after the Norröna sails. Bus routes 300 (airport and Sørvágur) and 400 (Klaksvík) leave from the harbour terminal, and the Nólsoy ferry (route 90) is a cheap afternoon when the weather closes the mountain roads. Check parking rules with the kommuna before leaving a car overnight in the centre; the rules were not reachable online today.
