Mykines for the puffins, by ferry from Sørvágur

A small ferry to the Faroes' western island and a guided walk among the puffin burrows, 1 May to 31 August; island fee DKK 400 online or 500, plus a fare not read today.

Mykines is the Faroese puffin day, and it is a day of rules rather than a walk you improvise: a small ferry from Sørvágur, a fee of DKK 400 booked online or DKK 500 on the day for everyone over 15, and a guide who must stay with you on the island, all from 1 May to 31 August (Visit Faroe Islands, 1 November 2026). It suits the ferry journey's Tórshavn nights in June and July, with a spare day behind it; it does not suit a fixed itinerary, because the sea decides whether the boat goes, and it cannot be fully costed here, because the ferry's booking site would not render its fares today.

What the sources say: Visit Faroe Islands' hiking-fees page gives the fee, the age line, the guide rule and a notice that the path to the lighthouse is closed after a landslide, with other parts of the island open. The ferry site, mykines.fo, describes daily departures from Sørvágur and instant confirmation in its page data, but showed no timetable or fare. Local guiding companies, hiking.fo among them, sell Mykines boat tours (DKK 650 for its "Extraordinary Boat Tour", read today) as a separate product. Nothing on the pages read today promises puffins on a given day; the birds come ashore to breed in the summer months and leave the cliffs at sea.

The arithmetic

The ferry timetable could not be read, so the time on the island is not stated and this page does not give a door-to-door figure. What can be counted: from Tórshavn, Sørvágur is 48 km by road, about 50 minutes each way by OSRM on OpenStreetMap, 100 minutes of driving in all; the Vágatunnilin charges DKK 50 for a car heading onto Vágar without a subscription (Vágar airport stop). The fee is DKK 400 a head online, so a party of four adults pays DKK 1,600 against DKK 2,000 on the day. On the ferry journey (/journeys/iceland-and-faroe-islands-by-ferry-12-days) Mykines replaces day three's Vágar loop; Gásadalur fits the evening if the boat is back.

Against Iceland

Iceland's road-side puffin cliff on this site is Látrabjarg (/experiences/latrabjarg-puffins): no fee, no boat, no guide, but a long Westfjords drive. Mykines is the opposite trade: short distances and many rules. The Vestmanna boat (/experiences/vestmanna-bird-cliffs-boat) is the Faroese cliff from below if Mykines' ferry is cancelled.

What goes wrong

Swell and wind, first: the ferry is small and the landing exposed, and a cancelled return is a night on the island. Book a bed you can move. Fog, second. The closed lighthouse path, third, for anyone who came for it. The season, fourth: outside 1 May to 31 August the fee page does not apply, and nothing read today says what does.

Questions people ask

Why is there no ferry price?
Because mykines.fo, the booking site, showed no fare or timetable without script on 1 November 2026, and this site does not carry figures from other people's blogs. Read the fare there and date it.
Do I have to take a guide?
Yes, from 1 May to 31 August. Visit Faroe Islands says the fee, DKK 500 or DKK 400 booked online before arrival for anyone over 15, includes a mandatory guide who accompanies you on the island.
Can I walk to the lighthouse?
Not at present. Visit Faroe Islands says the path to the lighthouse is closed after a landslide and that more landslides are possible; other parts of the island are open.
Mykines or Látrabjarg for puffins?
Látrabjarg in the Westfjords is free and on a road, but costs a Westfjords day 260 minutes on this site. Mykines costs a ferry, a fee and a whole day. If the trip is Iceland, go to Látrabjarg; if it is the Faroes, Mykines is the puffin day.

What this page adds

The fixed costs of a Mykines day that can be read, added up from a Tórshavn bed: the DKK 400 online fee (a four-adult party saves DKK 400 against paying on the day), 96 km and about 100 minutes of round-trip driving by OSRM, and the DKK 50 tunnel toll onto Vágar — with the ferry fare left blank because its site would not render.
